Just another Sunday

We’re off to Nottingham Forest. Not Notts Forest.

We’re back to the league, and playing on a Sunday because we were in the Europa League midweek. So were our opponents. We got a good result away from home. So did our opponents. Finish the job off at home and we should get an English club in the semi-finals. So should…

We’ve got a lot of connections with Forest, dating back to when we wouldn’t let them into our league in 1888. Since then we’ve bought players from them, sold them one or two and in the last couple of decades they’ve had a few managers who’ve played for or managed us. They won the European Cup and went down to division three, we did our best to do the same. They sold us Matty Cash for what turned out to be a bargain fee and had Douglas Luiz for a bit before he realised where he should be.

They’ve got a surprising number of Brazilians in their squad and they’re owned by a Greek lunatic whose hobby is paying off contracts. They’ve had sixteen managers and twelve caretakers in the past twenty years including three this season; they started with the vaguely passable Nuno and somehow ended up with Sean Dyche. You know what that means in terms of stylish football and potentially career-ending tackles.

Despite their European success they’ve been struggling in the league this season and having so many managers hasn’t helped. It’s them or one of Leeds, West Ham and Spurs to go down so there’s not much doubt who the popular favourite is. What kind of team they’ll be putting out after their midweek excursion is a bit of a mystery. Unai’s choice is probably a bit more obvious – we haven’t had any injuries this week so you might get Pau Torres rested, Luiz could well get the chance to have them saying he was never like that for them and please God, Leon Bailey will be nowhere near.

Whatever teams start, the result will be the same. We’ll win, we’ll be closer to the Champions League and they’ll be closer to the Championship.
