Next up are Brentford. It’s bound to rain.
It’s Sunday, and that means it’s back to Villa Park. After the dramas of Thursday night we’re taking another step towards winning the league and Brentford will be turning up, backed by their dozens of fanatical, passionate supporters.
For a club who quite frankly should never be mentioned in the same breath as us, we’ve got a fair bit of modern history with Brentford. We’ve signed players (very) good, (extremely) bad and indifferent (indirectly) from them. They trained up a manager for us without whom… etc. And we’ve never done as well against them as we should. That’ll be put right.
They started the season badly, although not as badly as us, then went moving on up the league, although not as far as us. Then they slipped back a bit and now they’re doing as well as could be expected when you’re Brentford. Their owner made a fortune by being good at sums and got them promoted by selling players for more than they bought them, which is where his skill with sums came in handy. You wish you’d gone to school more often now, don’t you?
Their latest manager played for two lots of Wanderers and two Albions and that’s the most interesting thing about him, or them. After having some of the most loathsome players in football their bigger irritation now is Jordan Henderson, which is a bit of a comedown from Ben Mee. We’ll have a few new faces in midfield, but no idea who they might be because if they’re not injured now they might be by kick-off time. There’ll be a debut or two, from players you’ve probably heard of. Let’s hope a couple of them are better dressed than they were on Thursday. We’ll have some of the young bloods involved as well.
It’s getting to the stage of the season when other results are as important as our own. Whatever they might be, one’s as certain as the weather will be. Three more points and on we go.
