We’re on the stroll with

Brentford in the Carabao Cup. It passes the time.

We went there the other Saturday and we’re going back again on Tuesday. The League Cup third round should see us drawn away to some club in the lower divisions who can get excited that the big lads are coming to town and won’t try very hard top beat us. They’ll earn decent money and we’ll go through to the next round. Either that or a match at home so our overlords can charge low(er) prices and we can see a couple of the Academy squad make their debuts.

Instead, we’re going to Brentford. A club best known for Ollie Watkins and Dean Smith, and an old ground that had a pub on each corner. They’ve all gone now, which leaves not a great deal. There’s not much to say about Brentford at the best of times and even less when we played there a couple of weeks ago. No idea how seriously they’ll be taking it and even less idea of who the players they do put out might be. Probably a load of kids who’ll be sold for tens of millions before long.

As for our collection of under-achieving worldbeaters, there’s even less idea. Now that we probably aren’t going to win the league it would be nice to think that Unai might be seriously interested in winning a trophy, and this one is still the easiest of the lot. We’ve already got a few players out injured so let’s see what some of their younger potential replacements can do. The least it can do is bump their transfer fee up a bit for when they’re sold next summer. Keep Watkins in the team as well, because he’s got to score again one day and Tuesday is as good a time as any.

The other thing to remember is that this is our first two games a week week and there’s no harm in remembering what that feels like because it’s going to be happening all season. And into round four we go.
