Paris au Printemps

Champions League. Paris St Germain. The fun starts here.

The quarter-finals of the Champions League, That’s what’s coming up next and that’s the level we’re at now. We seem to have become the nation’s favourites, so make the most of it before the nation gets tired of us winning everything.

Paris is the next stop on our European tour. Paris St Germain are the opposition and the Parc de Princes the venue. That’s the theme of the night and we’ll be careering round the pitch to make sure they don’t attack too much.

PSG were founded in 1970 and did okayish for forty-odd years, Then in 2011 they were taken over by Qataris and since them they’ve made Manchester City look modest and unsuccessful. They’ve won the French league eleven times, plus another 24 assorted trophies and boy, do they like to chant about it.

They’ve got a load of ultra group so expect flags, banners, smoke and a lot of chant. Some of them are low life and others are like a bad baby.

They’ve got a load of seriously top-quality players although the best of them will be in our team. Their manager isn’t too bad either, but ours is better. Although they’ve cleaned up in France for over a decade they’ve not done much in Europe and they’re a bit the arsenal of Europe. We might be playing the Arsenal of England in the semis.

But that, of course, is tempting fate. This is our biggest European match for more than forty years although given the opposition the pressure’s off. It’s going to be hard but these are the sort of obstacles we have to get past now and this Villa team look as though they can take on all-comers. As the cliche goes, we can’t win the tie on Wednesday night but we can lose it. Which we won’t. And to celebrate the poptones will be long and loud.
