One hundred and sixty-eight hours of significance.
Ross Barkley’s got a knee sprain and he’ll be out for two or three months, or possibly years. Either way he’ll probably get a game before Harvey Elliott.
Anyone ever heard of Mira Mikat? No, it’s not a January transfer target; apparently she’s a fashion designer and sh’s launched an Aston Villa collection. It’s available from the Villa super-duper-megastore and at £290 for a polo shirt it can stay there. You never got this sort of nonsense when the shop was next to the Lions Club.
Down to Brighton we go, which is a bit of a trek at the best of times although shorter than most of our midweek journeys these days. It started out looking like it was going to be a long night as well, with Emiliano Martinez getting injured in the warm-up and Marco Bizot having to pick the ball out of the back of the net twice in the first half-hour. Maybe it was because the match kicked off at 7.30 when we’re used to starting at eight now but it was about that time when we finally started playing.
Eight minutes before half-time Ollie Watkins scored with a bit of a tap-in, two things we haven’t seen much of this season, Then right on half-time Morgan Rogers hit a long ball forward for Watkins to run onto and make the space for an equaliser. This good play continued after the break with goals from Amadou Onana and Donyell Malen, who scored something like eight seconds after coming on, which has got to be a record. We even let Brighton get a goal back to make the match even more exciting and Bizot pulled off a late save worthy of the world’s number two. Another win, another good performance, at least for the last hour. It’s coming together.
And the inevitables being. Brighton are apparently ‘monitoring’ Lamare Bogarde. I’m sure they’ll be highly impressed.
The Maccabi match controversy still rumbles on and now it’s reached a Parliamentary select committee, who clearly haven’t got anything better to do.
The weekend begins with a couple of age-team derbies against Small Heath. Two games, twelve goals and we got elevn of them. The under-16s won 5-1 and the under 18s 6-0. Better make the most of it before the Sports 1/4 means they overshadow us in every way.
The future may belong to them but the present is looking good for us, and days like this prove it. There might not be a lot of point going over the Arsenal match again because you’ll have watch, read and listened to everything that was shown, written and said about it many times over and its importance can’t be overstated. We might not end up winning the league but this was a performance that showed yet again when we’re on form we can beat anyone. Going for the win and getting a goal so late shows that this team never gives up.
And most of all, the reaction when the ball hit the back of the net was one of those moments you’ll remember forever. I haven’t seen a show of togetherness like it since the play-off finals and while the people involved there deserve their place in history, their job was to get us into the Premier League. The current set-up should be looking to win it.
“Manage your expectations but never manage your dreams.” The words of Damian Vidagny round off the week. And what a week.
