One hundred and sixty-eight hours of Astonian humdrum.
John McGinn wins his seventieth cap as a Villa player, which is a record. And Scotland beat Belarus as well.
England play well and win. Morgan Rogers is on top form. That’ll put his transfer fee up a bit when he goes to Liverpool/Spurs/Manchester City in January.
Most of the players return back from international duty. Not all of them, because this is the Villa. Even less surprising than another Villa injury is the following: Manchester City have reached a settlement with the Premier League in their latest legal challenge over sponsorship rules, enabling them to now complete a hugely lucrative, long-term deal with Etihad Airways.
When he was playing for Poland Matty Cash went off a with a dead leg, nothing too serious and should be fine for Saturday. Oh yes.
Jaden Philogene scores a hat-trick for Ipswich. Have we still got a buyback, or a sell-on clause, or anything?
Zepiqueno Redmond comes on for Huddersfield and scores with his first touch. They lost.
Ross Barkley’s recovered from injury and now he’s out because of personal issues. If it’s not one thing it’s another. Unai says of the best keeper in the world that “We have the best goalkeeper in the world.”
And up we go to Everton. It’s a new ground so no more wooden seats and obstructed views. Well, not many. The views might have been improved but what you could see wasn’t much better than we’ve endured all season so far. Matty Cash was surprisingly fit and a couple of the players who should have been in the team already started but they didn’t make much difference.
We were still incapable of moving the ball forward and when we occasionally did the players were moving too slowly to reach it. Youri Tielemans went off injured at half-time, which is getting beyond a joke.
if you want a positive the Emilianos were good and not bad respectively but almost all the rest were a disappointment. Harvey Elliott looked promising and we didn’t concede but that was about it. Despite his international exploits Rogers is still a shadow of the player he can be, Ollie Watkins is well off the pace.
Four games without a goal is our worst start ever and Unai was not looking happy at the final whistle. It wasn’t exactly a memorable chapter in the long-running sage of Villa v Everton but at least the acoustics and our performance meant their supporters moaning couldn’t be heard as much. And anyone complaining about getting out of Villa Park after the match should have tried this place. Hundreds of millions and they still can’t get a decent train station.
Tielemans is due a scan. The worst is feared.
