As one window shuts, another doesn’t open yet.
The final day of the transfer window begins, and Villa announce the replacement for Old Trafford-bound Emiliano Martinez. Our new first-choice goalkeeper will be the highly-rated Argentinian Emiliano Martinez, with Manchester United signing Senne Lammens being announced elsewhere.
As the day wears on Victor Lindelof signs on a two year contract, which means he’s gone from pointless liability to useful experienced cover. There’s also a lot more noise from the Jadon Sancho camp.
And quite a bit about Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott. That’s a bit more like it. or actually, a lot more like it.
As the evening wears on both of the above are sorted, the window slams shut at seven and the Sky hyperbole machine cranks into gear. Record sales, and it would have been more if all but six clubs were allowed to sign whoever they wanted.
Next morning the formalities are completed. Sancho’s here for the season with us paying 80% of his wages, Elliott’s also on loan with some sort of obligation/option to buy. Whatever it is and whatever we end if doing, Uefa will say it’s illegal a week later. And that’s it until January. Could have been better, could have been worse.
Damian ‘Mr Controversy’ Vidagany makes another of his motivational speeches. It’s going to be hard but we’re all in it together. Him and Ron Saunders would get on, 110% guaranteed.
For some reason, a couple of days after the end of the window we sign the 17 year old Aberdeen striker Fletcher Boyd. It’s probably too late for a loan so we’re stuck with him until January.
The reason why there’s no proper football this weekend begins. John McGinn and ten inferiors draw with Denmark, Youri Tielemans captains Belgium, Matty Cash scores two in two games then gets injured in the second, the lowest Villa Park crowd of the season see Ezri Konsa and Morgan Rogers come on for England, who beat Andorra 2-0. The match was as good as it sounds, a lot of the crowd find out what it’s like to see the inside of a proper football ground, then what it’s like to wait for a train outside one. One day it might get better.
There’s also some story about how Harvey Elliott can only play ten games before the end of the year due to some weird combination of his loan period and the financial rules. With any other club it would be unlikely; with us it’s almost certainly true.
