Fulham are coming to town. They’ll be on their best behaviour.
As one month doesn’t so much end as peter out, another begins and this time what we’ve got to do is clear. We’ve got four matches left; win them all and we’ll very likely be in the Champions League again. Two wins and two draws gets us the consolation prize of the Europa League. Anything less and it’s Thursday in Transylvania again.
The first once comes along on Saturday at an unfeasibly early time. Fulham are doing okayish; they’re a place behind us in the league, which is as good as they can hope for, and they’ve got futile designs on a place in Europe. They’ll doubtless be roared on by a huge and vocal following comprising the most fervent, passionate and colourful supporters in the country. We’ve had some impressive Ultra displays this season but this one will beat the lot. Either that or they’ll have a few hundred stuck up the top corner of Witton Lane tutting that they can’t get avocado with their burgers.
They’ve got a Portugese manager who’s been there longer than any of their bosses since the one who signed George Best and Rodney Marsh. His assistant is still Stuart Gray, who should be due for a testimonial any day. Their former managers included Andy Ducat, who played for us and is the only cricketer to die while playing in a match at Lords, as well as Jimmy Hogan, who taught Europe how to play football. They’ve got Adomah Traore, who we’ve said enough about over the years and who still hasn’t become the player he was going to be. More reliable was the firm belief that two weeks was long enough for us to go without an injury so we’ve seen the last of Marcus Rashford.
Four matches, four wins. This will be the first one.
