Twenty Years Of Ecstasy and Heartbreak

Great Moments

Great Moments

Villa 5 Liverpool 1.
December 15th 1976

Liverpool were the best team in Europe. We're five up after half an hour. Everyone on Holte that night just stood in stunned, awe-struck silence at half time.

Small Heath 1 Villa 2.
October 11th 1980.

Without a doubt the most satisfying two points the whole championship campaign. Alan Evans got the best goal ever scored by a Villa player against the Retards.

Arsenal 2 Villa 0.
May 2nd 1981.

Twenty-odd thousand Villa fans went wild as, Ron Saunders' great side us the league championship. Everybody dreamed of Villa's forthcoming domination of football for the next ten years.

Anderlect 0 Villa 0.
April 21st 1982.

Best European trip ever. I went with £5 spending money and came back three days later still With £5.00. Don't ask what I did while was over there.

Bayern Munich 0 Villa 1.
May 26th 1982.

The whole trip was a bit of a blur, but I managed to see the match. Those of us who were there saw something we will probably ever see again. This was what dreams are made of.

Norwich City 0 Villa 2.
January 17th 1984.

Thousands of away supporters and away wins were few and far between at the time, but we managed both this night. 'The bells are ringing' was revived and sung as it should be - loud & slow with no clapping.

Man Ure 1 Villa 1.
November 5th 1988.

I've heard estimates of up to 15,000 Villa supporters going up to Old Trafford that day, but there was probably about 7,000. Nobody has ever been able to explain to me why we took so many fans with nothing at stake in a mediocre season.

Spurs 0 Villa 2.
February 21st 1990.

Back on top of the league for the first time in years and looking like we would never lose again. This was one night when we genuinely started believing we were going to win the league again.

Villa 2 Internationale 0.
October 244h 1990.

Bearing in mind how good Inter were at the time, this was probably our greatest ever European win.

Liverpool 1 Villa 2
January 1993.

This was the first time I'd seen Villa win at Anfield in thirteen visits. Again I'd convinced myself that we could Win the league. Again I was proved wrong.

Villa 3 Tranmere Rovers 1
27th February 1994.

The seventeen year wait to get to Wembley and the numerous near-misses during that period made this a very special day. I've never seen or heard support like it at Villa Park. It still moves me to tears whenever I watch the video.

Villa 3 Man Ure 1.
March 27th 1994.

The result of this game was never in question What made it extra special was that their treble was gone. I couldn't help wondering if we'll ever see Villa at Wembley in the FA Cup, but you can't have it all.
