I thought it was a corner but it might have been a pen. Either way it's why added time came about. I'm not sure if we were the only team to ever do it or not.

Yeah, we kicked the ball miles after a corner was given and the ref blew bang on full time, as was the way then, before anyone could fetch the ball back.

"On Saturday November 21st, 1891, Stoke City were losing 2-1 to Aston Villa when they were awarded a penalty with seconds of the match remaining. However, a Villa player kicked the ball out of the ground and by the time it had been returned the referee had blown for full-time."

The match report from the time completely ignored the incident.

ASTON VILLA v. STOKE.

These keen Midland rivals met to play their return League engagement on the Perry Barr Ground, Birmingham, on Saturday, before 8,000 spectators.

The previous game, at Stoke, on Oct. 24, ended in a win for the Villa three goals to two and Stoke on Saturday, seeing that Warner was still off were determined to be avenged.

They failed, however, as in the end they were beaten, though only by a bare majority.

The visitors, having lost the toss, kicked off with the disadvantages, which, however, were only small.

The Villa played a really fine game, and from bit of almost perfect play the forward Campbell scored at the end of five minutes' play.

Stoke replied with vigour and the Villa were driven on the defensive, and Naughton equalised after another five minutes play.

Soon after this Campbell, of the home side, was hurt, and had to retire.

During the remaining stages the Villa had only ten men engaged.

They kept equal, however, up to half-time, and in the second portion, though their opponents had as much of the game as they had, they managed to score once through Athersmith, and finally won two goals to one.

It’s no good just saying a Villa Player, we need to know who the Godfather of Housery was. It’s an admirable trait in the context of decisions against our club.

How strange. I wonder if the author fucked off before the end.

The story is Bill Dunning. But seems to be bollocks as he wasn't here at the time. The whole thing feels a bit apocryphal, to me, reading that.

Nah it definitely happened. As did Athersmith playing with a brolly, we were formed under a gas lamp and so on. It's more enjoyable to just go with it.

We've been such a nice club for years. Hopefully we start to win as many trophies as we did back then when we used these tactics.

That's why the Witton Lane Stand was single tier, it was designed that way for emergency purposes.
