I was at Goodison in 1981 when Tony Morley scored the goal of the season. It was the game I started to genuinely believe we could win the league. A great old stadium.

Went to the FA cup match in 1978. One of those mad 70's away days. Walking into a Blue pub drunk as skunks at 12 only being saved from a kicking by doing the Dying Fly. Drinking with Toffees until 2:30, getting into the ground and then passing out until the second half. Andy Gray scored and I didn't know we were 4-0 down so went ballistic only to be brought down to Earth moments later. Massive scrap after the match. Mate went missing and we feared the worst. Back into the pub to find him with a head wound being treated by barmaids. More drinks and then back home. Still see the lad who had the head wound.

Like you, Dick, that win at Goodison convinced me we were in with a shout. Everton were in really good form at the time we played them (I think they had just knocked Liverpool out of the cup) and we could easily have beaten them by more than we did. I think we hit the post a couple of times, too.

Given our strong record there in recent times and the fact we've played them more than anyone else, is this the ground where we've won most of our away games?

Assuming this site is accurate, I threw it into Excel, excluded cup games and this is the overall record for League 1 and Premier League:

Villa at home:
D - 26
L - 28
W - 53

Everton at home:
D - 30
L - 29
W - 48

I idn't think we'd ever played each other in the third tier?

Mu first away outside the Midlands clubs was the 4-1 defeat in 1978.

Went there in Nov 99 for a drabbish 0-0,  but the match was just punctuating an epic weekend visit of loads of us friends to Liverpool, legendary.
Was back there on my 26th birthday for the FA cup QF 2-1 in Feb 2000, such a great day.
More recently in Jan 2022 under that half wit Stevie G, brought my lad up for the 1-0 win.

Obviously a bit dilapidated now, but a great old ground and along with Villa one of the last of its kind.

3-3 game.  I was not behind the goal but in the stand to the left of the away end - we were all joining in at Half Time.  It was actually annoying the home fans at one point.

Seem to remember a similar effort at the Baseball Ground the following September too.

Have been there loads, probably more than anywhere else, some great games but my favourite memory of there was probably the worst game of the lot. Got absolutely drenched in the lower tier, a group of about 50 of us singing non-stop all game in a bid to stave off death by boredom or cold, and then after 90 minutes of dross Merson lobs the keeper from 40 yards.

Tremendous but the timing of it made it all worthwhile!

The GT chant started at HT and didn't stop until after the final whistle then the great man came out onto the pitch to wave goodbye .

That 1990 game was an absolute belter and the send off for SGT was amazing.
