Just seen on this day in 1983 - We played Northampton in the FA Cup 3rd round - won 1-0 with a brilliant Mark Walter's goal

I was there that day a 3 sided ground - it does not seem that long ago (I am very old!)

Today in 1981, with Villa already 1 up from a Peter Withe header, Kenny Swain carried the ball out of defence on the right before backheeling it to Gary Shaw. Gary then split the Liverpool defence with a pass which allowed Dennis Mortimer to slide the ball past Ray Clemence. If I close my eyes I can still see it unfolding.

Withe's goal wasn't a header, and I only know that as the goals came up on Twitter today.

Dennis Mortimer’s goal is one of my favourite Villa Park goals. The simple move from defence to attack was almost ahead of its time and Unai would be proud if we scored a goal like that with our current squad.

I was 14 back then and this victory made me realise that we could actually win the league. Happy memories indeed.

You're right and I knew that do not sure why I wrote it like that. I think I was too busy thinking of Tony Morley (my favourite player in yhat team) turning Richard Money inside out

If i remember correctly it was freezing cold and their goal keeper dropped the ball over the line.

Absolutely awful team and season!

5 years ago today Ezri Konsa thought he'd got his first Villa goal with a stoppage time winner against Watford only to be told in his post-match interview the ball had flicked Tyrone Mings on the way into the net.

I went to that game and felt for all money that Ezri had got the winner.

He looked really upset when he heard the news!
