It's got to the point that it's hardly worth making a statement over, anything slightly controversial in the public sphere will be followed immediately with online death threats and abuse.

The answer is to end it, but that won't happen, and so instead there's shock, revulsion, and further content to comment upon.

Death threats don't have the cachet they used to, do they? Any Herbert on Twitter can spew them out. It took real commitment back in the day to buy all those magazines and cut out the individual letters to read: "I'm going to find you, Eddie the Eagle. I'm going to make you my slave and force you to shave my toes. I know you live in Cheltenham." Or stuff like that. I don't know.

If I had to guess,  I'd say that'd probably be Ann Widdecombe. Or Penelope Keith, obviously.

Then leave the magazine they were cut from about the place for the police to find, I've seen this episode.

What is it with these people?

Everton condemn death threats towards Tarkowski

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/c4gr3ryxdpko

Quote
Everton have condemned death threats made towards James Tarkowski and his family following the defender's tackle in Wednesday's Merseyside derby at Anfield.

Tarkowski was booked for a late challenge on Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, but the Premier League's refereeing body later said he should have been sent off.

"Everton Football Club is aware of threats made towards James Tarkowski and his family on social media. Such behaviour is completely unacceptable and has no place in football or society," read a Toffees statement.

"The club is liaising with James and his wife Samantha, and stands ready to engage with the social media companies and assist the police with any potential investigation.

"Everton strongly condemns any form of online or offline intimidation, threats or abuse directed at players, staff or their families."

Tarkowski's wife Samantha said the abuse was "beyond disgusting" in an Instagram post.

"The level of abuse my husband is receiving wishing death on him, vile comments about me, about us as a couple and about him as a person is beyond disgusting," she said.

"People forget that he is more than just a footballer. He is a husband, a son, a brother, a friend and most importantly the father of our two children.

"Football is a sport, but the way some so-called fans behave is disgraceful. The abuse, the threats - it's not passion, it's pathetic. We're real people and this goes far beyond football."

The still photos being used in the media don't help.

Yes, it was an out of control tackle and probably should have been a red card (or at least looked at on the monitor by the Ref).
However, he cleared the ball before contacting the player.
The fact that the ball isn't in most of the photos makes the tackle look worse than it was (ie definite yellow, probable red but not ridiculous)

It was a truly dreadful tackle, there's no excuse to be made for that.

He's done it before . He knows exactly what he's doing.

Or he might just be a clumsy oaf.
