If you take away set pieces and penalties JWP got 3 goals and 1 assist so we're back to the question of whether he'd get into our team purely for his set pieces because without those he's not an upgrade, and at 28 I don't you spend that sort of money on someone who isn't clearly worthy of a starting spot.

Apparently Southampton want £50m+ for JWP.

Even I think that's ridiculous.

It surely has West Ham written all over after selling Rice. Could maybe see him at Newcastle but apart from that I don't see anyone stumping that sort of money up for him.

It's the clearest example yet of the "English premium".  He's a good player, certainly around the £20m category, but £50m? I can't believe anyone would pay that for him, unless it's someone desperate for more "homegrown" players to stay inside the rules?

Haha agreed 100%.
£25 million would even be pushing it a little.

:-)
Good luck to them if they can get that, wasn’t that the price tag a couple of summers back when we were interested …hopefully someone else pays it :-)

But why take away these . It's a fact.

Because you need the whole team to contribute in all aspects - a fine setpiece taker is one thing, but if that's all you do (and you're worth 8 goals a year or something) and your team gets relegated, well, that's not a great record.

I mean the answer is right there in the quote...

If he was competing for a spot with Buendia/Bailey then fine but he's not going to start ahead of Luiz or Ramsey who have much better output in open play and he's nowhere near strong enough defensively to play the kamara role. That leaves McGinn who, I reckon, covers about half again the amount of ground JWP does and gives us an energy and tenacity that makes us so difficult to play against so I doubt JWP starts regularly there either (it's also the position I think he'd be best suited to in our gameplan) so £50m for a 28 year old who would spend a lot of time on the bench but might score a free kick or 2 in his cameos from there.

To be fair, goals are incredibly difficult to come by so having someone who can do it from 20 yards then I can see why that is valuable. Not quite 50 mil valuable but I can see why some would see it as a bit of a 'cheat code'. Can't break a team down? Get a cheap foul on the edge of the box and see what JWP can do. I don't think Moyes will be there but he'd love that.

I agree with this, I just think that if we're recruiting for that we'd ned to look for someone to plays more as a 10/2nd striker/winger so they're competing for the spot where we're weakest if they're not quite as productive in open play as we need.

Nope.

He topped the list in 2020 too.

Personally I don’t think he’s enough of an upgrade to justify the cost, but I think he’s on par with McGinn, and technically better with the ball too.

I suspected links with US players and Chris Heck may have some sway/imput for taking Tyler Adams if we sign the American International

Thank you Danno.
It's good you can show up those who think JWP is only a set pieces player
Because he's far more than that and capable off the ball and open play and strikes the ball better than McGinn ever could

Yes, clearly that's all he does to some football observers minds.
Clearly not though and he's underrated. People think he just takes free kicks. Nonsense.
Don't know what people expect . Tyler Adams all action midfielder with little finesse or JWP?

Ok, fair enough, I still don't think he offers the same tenacity and aggression that McGinn brings but he clearly works harder than I'd noticed. I'd still say he's not an upgrade for us though and certainly not £50m worth.
