'He's training well and is a great asset to the team' should sufficeThe longer version of that interview sounds like McGinn knows he shouldn't have said what he said last season, and is trying to make up for it now by praising his growth.

If ollie wants to stay as starter he needs to improve.Everton at home is a perfect opportunityIf you’d have said that, I’d have agreed. You actually said Duran has to start and that Watkins has been really rubbish. That doesn’t give him to opportunity to improve against Everton.Which isnt that the truth? Hasnt ollie been bad the last three games? Im not saying anything that isnt correct there. The second part hasnt duran started the season well and is pushing for a start? Generally speaking you dont keep playing players who perform poorly over x amount of games. If ollie has another bad game vs everton and duran scores again how can you leave duran out?

He’s missed some chances but for the main part his work off the ball has still been better than whenever Duran has been on the pitch. Duran is certainly pushing for a start but he doesn’t HAVE to start, which is what you said. You can leave Duran out if you think that overall Watkins will give you more in the first part of a game and Duran is more dangerous coming on against a tired defence. If Duran starts a game and proves his overall game is worth more to the team than Watkins, then you can’t leave him out.
