You're welcome to disagree. But no one would be saying we're still in 3 competitions if we were 14th. Even though we technically would be it's not how the term is used in a football sense.

I know what you mean, but finishing 5th vs finishing 10th is a big difference for us.

I think there is a dangerous assumption creeping in that we'll win one of the FA Cup or CL. I, myself, have a false confidence that we might win one.

But the most likely outcome is that we won't win either.

If that's the case, more rides on our final position than simply winning the league vs not, particularly for a club in transition, as we are. Finishing 6th vs 8th could be important in terms of keeping our best players.

So we're still in it in that we still have things to gain/lose.

UE is with Rory:

“We have demanded ourselves to be focused in last 2 months and we remain in 3 competitions”.

And whilst highly unlikely, we could still finish above Liverpool.

Of course we’re still in 3 competitions. Finishing 1st isn’t the only position which results in an outcome. The higher up the league, the bigger the prize. We’re clearly still in the competition.

This man deserves so much credit. (As do I for resurrecting Emery's page from where it was)

When was the last time we were still in three competitions at the beginning of April?
Never, in my memory. 1996 is nearest as we won the League Cup on 24 March but lost the FA cup semi final to Liverpool on 31 March and whilst we finished 4th in the League we were not in the reckoning for a CL place.

We are not really in three competitions now. The battle for 5th isn’t a recognised competition
There’s a prize for it so it is a competition and it’s one that ranks higher than both the League and FA cup for a club’s
Finances. Sure, there’s no silverware but  achieving it means you have a better chance of hanging onto and recruiting the better players.

We are still competing in it. We may not be competing for it but mathematically we could. Soon enough that last bit may change but I'd rather finish 2nd than 3rd, 3rd than 4th etc.

I think the point was about what an achievement it is to still be in three competitions. It's obviously no achievement whatsoever to still be in a competition that we are bound to still be in by default. We are in April still with a chance of winning two major trophies, for the first time since, maybe, 1913.

The boss

Unai Emery: "Even when they [players] are sleeping they have to think football and wake-up thinking football. Now is the moment. It is our responsibility to be as good as possible. If they are going to a party or travelling to London, they are not focusing on football."

That's one way of saying we won't be signing Grealish.

I used to dream Villa would have that sort of mentality. Just dig into being the best possible club we can be. Not just a vehicle to riches, but to actually want to be winners and make a mark in life and football. I am so, so grateful Emery manages Villa.

Those four words coming from Emery feel incredibly exciting.

They do.

The most Villa thing EVER to do now would be to be inspired by those words and then watch us completely shit the bed at Brighton tonight.
