Carlos the jackal three different disguises one great, one average and one monumentally awful.

Wasn't a big fan, some great performances against Arsenal twice and pocketed Haaland....but lots of average and downright awful performances too. You just couldn't rely on him.

Had a dreadful injury that likely impacted his mobility. But really was not a good fit for what Emery wants in a CB. For a guy with his physique he never dominated opponents consistently, in our box or theirs. Really did not want to play in a high defensive line, won't forget his effort trying to play offside well into Everton's half last season!

💣 Wolves have made a £10m offer for Diego Carlos as his on-off move to Fenerbahce stalled again tonight.

Could not be relied upon consistently.

But overall, could be relied upon more consistently than the non-Mings alternatives.

Actually, not true. They were more consistent in the concession of goals. We kept quite a lot more clean sheets when Carlos played.

Still find it really strange that that doesn’t matter to people. Maybe the memorable nature of his mistakes makes them overlook the actual efficiency of the defences he played in. It’s the only explanation that makes sense of the irrational views of otherwise rational posters.

Setting aside amortisation, PSR and all those funky things and we signed him for £25 mill and sold him for £11 mill.

So in that context, £14 million in old money for a back up centre half capable of the odd worldie game here and there isn’t the worst business we’ve ever done.

Quite. I see it like this. Our defence (all combinations) was pretty weak last season as can be seen by the steep rise in goals conceded compared to the season before.. At the start of the season, Carlos didn’t play much outside of the conference league games, including the Hibs qualifier, and was basically drafted in for the Man City and Arsenal games. I don’t think it’s much of a leap to suggest that had he not been, considering we were consistently conceding one goal against any old shite, we probably wouldn’t have won those games. Then of course he was MOTM ( and deservedly so) for the Arsenal away game.

We qualified for the CL and all its riches by two points.

I wonder if we’d concede even fewer goals with a better defender than Carlos. Hopefully Badé is that person.
