Only mistake was not getting back soon enough for the first goal.  He's watching the ball when the run is made.

Digne is lucky to have escaped much criticism for the first goal too.

He glances over his shoulder and sees Hakimi start to make his run, then completely ignores him as he runs infield.

By the time Hakimi is on his own at the edge of the box, Digne's on his own twenty yards away.

He may be a limited player, but he gives everything that he has and played bloody well last night. As Des says, had he not had that shite nothing yellow in the 1st leg things may have been different.

I thought he had a poor first half but a much improved performance after the break. That said at this level I think his deficiencies with the ball and his variable final ball get shown up but he gave it his all and you can’t ask for more than that.

I’d say last nights performance by Hakimi showed what a world class right back looks like though even he was struggling with our 25 minute power play after half time.

I think like most RB is the position where we need to have a big signing this summer but that will depend on which Euro competition we’re in.

As per whenever this comes up though - who?

There aren't many elite ones around, and at least two bigger fish are also going to be interested should one of them become available.

My knowledge of these things is somewhat lacking Dave so I’ve got no idea. That said let’s see how Garcia evolves and also what happens with KKH and Ned this summer. I’m just hopeful the triumvirate have got a plan in place.

A player doesn't have to be the new Cafu to be an upgrade on Cash (who largely did well last night).

They don't, but even a small upgrade is going to either be difficult to find or cost lots of money that we're unlikely to spend.

Frimpong and Dumfries tend to be the sexy names that come up most often in the "why don't we just go and sign that really good right-back?" conversations.

But if we were to accept that they're either off to Man City or Bayern, or are replacing the likes of Alexander-Arnold when he goes to Real, who are we looking at?

I appreciate it's not exactly scientific, but if you look at Transfermarkt's assessement of the most valuable right-backs, you've got the above, White, Kounde, Hakimi, Timber.

We're not buying Dalot / Gusto / Livramento / Porro. And apart from Livramento, I imagine any of the others would be greeted with apathetic shrugs for the tens of millions we'd need to spend.

Geertruida has been and gone. Tomiyasu or Mazrouai from Arsenal or Man Utd's reserves?

Then it's Cash himself on the list.

It seems to me that they've looked and decided that in the absence of any plug-and-play right backs available for us to spend £40m on, we're going to try and turn Andres Garcia from a £7m one into a £40m one.

Agreed, he watched him, but then didn't track the run. I don't know if he was anticipating the ball coming all the way across and out the other side, or expected someone centrally to cover him, but either way, he left his man run free and as a result he had a free shot from 16 yards out.  Not good.

I called him out along with several others for the first goal.

It was a very quick break but still avoidable on a number of levels.

First one was the most preventable of the two. Second one just cut us open and was noticeable that Mendy was almost furthest forward and close to the halfway line even when Onana lost possession in the box. Not sure why their full back was playing central striker at that point in time but Konsa had pushed right up with Cash trying to call him back as he had Mendy and the Georgian with him And a massive gap to the other wing where Torres had Dembele and then dragged wide to right back who had broken through with the ball so was a 4 on 2 break.

He cost us an initial £14m from Forest in September 2020. He is humble, gives his all, works hard and has improved no end. He's a great player and I like him. Sure he makes mistakes but so does every player out there.

Roy Keane's retired.
