Just shows how giving youth players runs out off the bench and cameos in the champions league can really boost their value. I'd be giving Louis Barry the same opportunity this Jan.

I’d be staggered if we play Barry this Jan - that would stop him being able to play for another club.

I do wonder if this was the plan all along.

We knew his true value, other clubs set the price, i.e. £18m in the summer, we got a 30% discount, £13.5m then sell him in January for the inflated window price i.e. £20m and make even more.

We're not making even more though, we only got a 30% discount because of our sell-on clause. So if he'd joined Ipswich last summer we'd have got the value of the extra £6-7m then rather than now.

Obviously there are PSR benefits to doing it this way, but there's no extra money coming in. Half a year of wages/ taxes / signing fee / agents fees mean we'll have spent more that we're pretty much at break-even.

That's not to knock it, it still seems like a very good bit of business all round.

Similar to Bogarde - those handful of Premier League appearances have added millions to his value.

The deal underlines the value of negotiating from a position of strength.

We're in a strong position, Ipswich are not. It felt like for decades we were always in Ipswich's position.

Agree with both john and lee. Its wonderful to be the team in control these days and no longer the pushoevers

Football is bonkers

I scored 19 goals in the district league back in 1979
I reckon I’ll be worth 10 million now

We paid Hull £13m and he was on a 5 yr contract.
6 months into it, so his amortised value is (13x95%) = £11.7m.

Deduct that from the £20m we're getting from Ipswich and that's a net £8.3m into the PSR kitty.

You can't argue with the wheeling and dealing, although I have some sympathy for Jaden who's been traded back and forth.

However, from Villa's perspective, he hasn't shown the faintest glimmer of what he'd done at Hull, so increasing his value by that much months in 6 months is cracking business.

Good luck to him at Ipswich- hope he rediscovered hus Hull form - especially against our immediate rivals.

Best of luck to the kid. Ipswich a much better move than Everton for him.

21 years old and already three permanent transfers in his career. He has been traded like a piece of meat since he turned professional but he must be a very wealthy lad with those signing on fees alone. Good luck to him.

What is Monchi doing? Makes the summer business look better in that context.
It might've been a bit of both.  We'd bought him with the intention of him fitting in to the first team squad, but maybe knowing that it was a fairly low-risk move as we could shift him fairly easily if things didn't work out.

It's exactly that. Emery didn't want to lose him first time and we had a decent sell on clause that meant we could re-sign him for below market value. This would then give us flexibility in the future that we could at least make our money back on him. As it stands, we're going to make a small profit.

Excellent deal for both the club and the player
