Just wondering, could anyone off the top of their heads give an example of a goal, and best of all a significant goal, that was either wrongly allowed, or wrongly disallowed, for OFFSIDE, in any game pre-VAR?

That was a perfect example of a referee knowing the law and executing to it's finest.  Player running back towards his own half as the ball was played to his team mate standing in his own half.  The first player was not interfering with any stage of that phase of play and the second player was clearly onside.  Brilliant officiating with the added bonus of it being against Leeds.

Bomber brown for WBA vs Leeds. Denied them the league I think.

Hand of God.

Sorry! I meant for offside. I shall edit my orginal post
Chelsea were awarded a goal v Cardiff which was later shown to be nearly 2 yards offside. Their manager att was Colin Wanker and needlessly to say went ballistic which resulted in fines and bans. I think it was one of the decisions that set the ball rolling for VAR to be introduced.

Funnily enough we were talking about this very thing as we came away from the Liverpool game.
I think the answer is probably, 1000’s, but we will never know.
The point being, it’s always been part of the beauty of the game.  Some you win, some you lose, but either way it’s better than the forensic analysis of every single goal now that is draining the life  and enjoyment from the game.

That said, one of the best ‘not offsides’ was when Dean Saunders scored against the rags in a cup game at Villa park after collecting the ball just inside his own half, turning and running the length of their half and scoring.
Jimmy Greaves on commentary said it should have been offside, even though it started in our half, purely because Deano couldn’t possible have scored such a great goal.

Greaves said it should have been offside as it was that tight the lino couldn't have seen it right in real time.

Something I mentioned elsewhere - Derek Mountfield's header in our last game of the 1980s at home against Arsenal. He looked miles offside but it still counted. The fact that it infuriated Tony Adams just added to the joy

Mention of the bomber brown one, I'm sure we had one called back under Big Ron where  Townsend ran on to the through ball but Richardson, who wasn't going for it was coming back from offside. No one seemed to be too bothered about the call at the time. It wasn't a goal disallowed as the flag/whistle had gone up beforehand, but if it had rightly been let go, I reckon the goal would have been scored.

Works pretty well in rugby. Main difference ref gets a replay to look at THAT WE ALL SEE , and he is the one asking for the replay usually, and he is also the one that makes the decision. On TV you can hear the audio and it's all clear and transparent.
Ref also tells the VAR ref what his on field call is and invites them to agree or not. This tends to lead to corroboration with the referee unless it's "clear and obvious" , and the ref maintains his authority throughout

Hard to see , with that model to follow, how football made such a godawful mess of the whole thing.

Sorry - wrongly allowed or disallowed for offside, I meant to say.

One absolutely ridiculous one ruling out a blatantly onside goal for Dalian at Highbury in our 94 league cup winning run. Might have been two now I think about it.

There aren’t many examples as the incorrect offsides would get flagged and match blown up well before the shot, so the goal was never scored.

Doubt that VAR will be scrapped as there are enough clubs that benefit from decisions so, why would they want to scrap it? Following all the long stoppages in our match v Liverpool, I’d get rid of it in an instant.

They don't need to scrap it, they just need to learn how to fucking use it.

Every other country it is used in seems to manage to do so less intrusively than our line-staring caravan wankers.

If you've watched a match without VAR recently, you'll see how essential it now is. It eradicates most bad decisions yet we focus on the ones which slip through the net.

I'm very happy I don't have to suffer through the VAR nonsense back home. I know this has been commented upon earlier in the thread but I saw this little thing on BBC today which made me a bit homesick:
