Last night, I thought Mings looked pretty good: he took the energy out of Pedro well and was organising the back four very visibly. The surprise was that his passing was pretty good as well: he passed more quickly than Torres seems to and was generally accurate; may be not as incisive.

I thought he was excellent  yesterday.  He made a few slight errors but his general  play was awesome. In the air he was a commanding warrior.

Well done tyrone.

Last night was absolutely the sort of game where Tyrone is a better pick than Torres. I doubt we’d have kept a clean sheet without him.

Completely agree. Lat night was the perfect physical battle for him.
The only defender we have who heads the ball away, not up.

He still needs a little time to be 100% match fit, but he is nearly there.
It good to have him back

They’d have had far more joy from the many corners they had if Mings wasn’t there. He doesn’t have Torres’s composure and passing ability even though he’s good in that area. Torres doesn’t have what Mings has defensively and certainly from set pieces, an essential requirement against a team fighting for their lives.

His assertiveness and tenacity really showed last night. Apart from his commanding headers defending corners, he didn't give Everton's strikers any time and space. His good defending trumps Torres' distribution currently.

So I’d see it slightly differently. Mings did well under the aerial bombardment towards the end. But I’d say he had pretty poor night from a distribution perspective and that was quite a key factor in them being able to launch attacks and create pressure. With Torres, I think we keep the ball better and face less of the issues we did face.

Both good players, but if we’re trying to control games - particularly against better opposition than Everton - we can’t keep gifting the ball back.

Bloke behind me was calling him a fucking idiot all game and even blamed him when Digne miscontrolled his pass and gave the ball away. Glad he's not someone I normally sit near at matches.

In terms of Ty's performance, it was noticeable how many defensive corners he got to. But he did provide a flick on for their injury time chance. His distribution was mixed, I think it's fair to say. However, it's not like any of our other centre backs have been outstanding this year so more than happy for him and Ezri to keep on rebuilding that partnership they had.

Off the pitch and as a man, as always, exemplary. Should probably have said that to bloke behind me.

Agreed. With backs to the wall I think Mings is the perfect defender but in games we expect to control, Pau is the better option.

Pau too has the occasional brain fart, he's not exempt.

The games we expect to control? We need to be 3-0 up to have that expectation. It hasn't happened this season yet.

I get both sides and it's a bit 'chicken & egg', but as you say we're not getting into comfortable positions and by the manager's own words last night we're conceding too many goals. I happen to think we're concentrating too hard on controlling the games at times as opposed to just sticking the ball in/stopping the ball entering the net, but then this may be part of a bigger picture of not 'Spursing' the 2nd half of the season and conserving energy.

There are a lot more heart in mouth moments whn Tyrone is playing out from the back, Pau is a different beast on the ball with his ability to keep the ball in close control.  Physically Mings played an excellent game last night and his presence in the box, especially from set pieces, was a massive bonus, typically Everton employed a full set of Igors.

Ty headed everything thrown at him last night at Goodison.

Pau's looked his best in the Champions League games. I think he'll look better once we replace Carlos with a big physical brute who can play out from the back.
