We've had some excellent Centre Backs over the years.

Evans
McGrath
Ehiogu
Southgate
Laursen
Mellberg
Terry

Would we hold Mings in similar regard?

 Steve Sims?

As a leader and all-around good guy, yes. As a player, he is notch below most of those.

Mellberg better then Mings as a player? My opinion is that they are almost the same in both play and personality. Laursen, in the season and a half he was fit was a better defender of course, which also probably raised Mellberg up as well.

In that list I'd only have McGrath and Laursen definitively ahead of Mings as players for us.  As a signing, Mings has been one of the most important we've ever made - I think it's safe to say that if we hadn't got him when we did we wouldn't have got promoted that year, and we would be miles off where we are now.

Mings is a more versatile defender than Laursen too, on account of his greater  athleticism. Means we can play a higher line. His technique is better too.

Still trying to collect up all the Mitre Deltas he smashed over the old Witton Lane Stand.

I'm not sure about the technique being better, Laursen was absolutely fantastic when fit. Which sadly, just wasn't often enough.

Passing etc? I'd have said so. Laursen was a competent enough player on the ball, but not capable of what Mings is imo.

Obviously in terms of pure defending - positioning, organising, sheer physical bravery - Laursen was absolutely incredible.

It makes you wonder what other hidden gems at Weymouth we're currently missing out on.

I'd put Mings in the same category as Mellberg. Both are/were very good players for us but they are also something far morebecause of who they are and how they became such a massive part of the connection between the club and the fans.

Mings above Southgate for me.

And not because of my enduring dislike for the former Boro captain.

He wasn't really...great in the air not so much on the floor. Southgate for me next after McGrath, was a top player for us.
