I remember the short-lived BBC Grandstand magazine in late 1989/early 1990 listing young sports people who were expected to become household names in the 1990s. Graham Thorpe was the young cricketer mentioned. Off the top of my head the athlete was Katherine Merry, who was only 13 or 14, at the time and the footballer was Steve Walters.

Was on crutches at the end of the game.

Thorpe was one of the few players that skipper Atherton knew he could rely on to perform regularly at Test level.

He had a very simple, disciplined approach-he only played about three shots -but he knew his game, stuck to it and scored a stack of runs.

So sad he took his own life.

England Lions playing Sri Lanka at New Road for 4 days starting Wednesday…couple of your bear players in the squad I believe…no ‘home’ players this time which will make that Tw@ Moores recruitment work harder this winter

Only just found out the cause of death. Very sad.

Very early days, but he looks a very good prospect at this point.  Looks like he's got a fairly straightforward technique, but has the power to hit boundaries when needed.

Yes, there isn't much margin for error when you're bowling to him.

If he stays fit he’s going to be a superstar I reckon. It’s effortless with him.

On the subject of superstars, they reeled off some of Kumar Sangakkara's stats on TMS yesterday.  Averaged 66 in tests when he didn't keep and some of his season averages playing for Surrey in the County Championship were incredible.
