Bogarde wasn't on the bench yesterday either, was he?

On a lighter note, clearly approving new terms and conditions for an online selling app I've only used onvce was clearly more attractive than the painful task I was procrastinating.
Force of habit searching for Villa items revealed the John McGinn draft excluder

From Konza thread
Didn't Steve Bruce sign John McGinn?
Oh yes quite right!
I just always associate McGinn and Smith.
So it's Bruce who made our best value signing this century.
And this is how he did it :
"I remember Neil Lennon's son telling me the best player in Scotland was John McGinn. He was at Hibs at the time, Lenny, so I got straight on the phone to him and said we need to find out about McGinn. So we went to work on it.

On signing McGinn
"I had heard his grandad used to be Celtic chairman. We had to stall.
We didn't have the £2million at the time and he was going to Celtic, but I had heard that his dad and grandad played golf. I thought 'I am going to try and get his dad down to give us a little bit of stalling time'
We got him to The Belfry and got the pro to play him - which gave us another 4-5 hours to rustle up the £2million because we didn't have it at the time. I am really pleased for him because he has turned into a really, really top player"

Quite Brilliant by Bruce.

He does so much running off the ball, he's not a natural athlete given his size (apart from the elite-level arse) and he's 30 in October.

In an era of 5 subs regularly being made, I think 90 minute games are probably a thing of the past for him now.

Still expect him to start the majority of our matches next season and to continue to be a key player for us.
I'm wondering where is he fitting into the team ? Especially bringing in two or three more signings and probably a couple of those being big name players.
I tend to think he be club captain but not necessarily a guaranteed starter though will start initially
I think once squad is finalised can see what the approach will be.

Worth opening the debate again given some felt discontent with his contribution

I think we're getting to the point where he'll be an important squad player, but without necessarily being first choice. McGinn's issue is we've got better players than him in every position now, and he doesn't really have a nailed on position to call his own.

I love his control of the ball.  He very rarely if ever gives the ball away.  But I agree in 18 months time he will be a squad player at best.

I agree on the quality aspect but I suspect there’ll be a period where Emery will pick him ahead of more talented players because he needs his personality on the pitch. Back handed praise but a bit like how Henderson was picked by clearly decent managers despite being a limited player.

The Aston Villa captain, John McGinn, has said players’ mental health is at risk because of the volume of matches and that next summer’s Club World Cup is a sign of things “getting a little out of hand”.

McGinn, who played 66 matches last season, including with Scotland at Euro 2024, acknowledged success could be a double-edged sword. “I think that there is a part of it that’s getting a little out of hand, especially the Club World Cup next season,” he said. “We are fortunate to be well paid for doing a job we absolutely love. No one is getting away from that, but at times the mental side of things you need to switch off.

“Initially, when we first got into European competition, it was like: ‘Keep the games coming, just keep them coming.’ But it is hard to churn them out when you are playing 70-plus games a season and then you’re playing international games. There’s not a lot of time to rest.”

Asked about the pressures games bring, McGinn said: “It’s more so the mental side. Football at this level brings amazing highs and tremendous lows. At the end of the season you just want to go: ‘Hands up, I’m done.’ But now the teams in that Club World Cup, they’re not going to have any time to do that. People’s health is the most important thing

Mentioning the Club World Cup suggests he's been speaking with Grealish, who has less time to make a drunken fool if himself next summer because of the Club World Cup tournament.

Quite frankly, McGinn should not be complaining. He played 66 games. It is his profession. Milner and Young do not moan. I see his point, but it's about how a professional looks after themselves off the pitch, and it sounds like Ginny feeling under pressure to perform at a high level on a consistent basis.

McCoist said on TNT the other night that McGinn never gets less than a 7/10. I'm not sure. I've seen him have some really awful showings, but in games when he's not performing, he can spring into action for periods and looks busy and he'll always be a committed player.

Interesting thoughts, but I can't help thinking he's going to be rotation for Ginny so he won't need to worry about playing too many games.

I remember under Deano of the 6th game in 18 days we beat Arsenal 1-0. And didn't even make many changes in that period!

Henderson did at least have a defined role in the team though, as the main water carrier and grafter. McGinn isn't going to get in to central midfield ahead of Tielemans or Onana (or Kamara when he's back). Be interesting to see who makes way when Bailey is back fit.

McGinn clearly states he's talking about the mental side. Trying to recover from a massive loss, or calm down after a huge win, to focus on the next match, it probably does take a lot out of a player. I thought a lot of our players were looking a little jaded by the end of last season and were checked out mentally before the season was over. Hopefully we can manage workloads better this year, if we get lucky with injuries.
