Ah, the middle class Weatherspoons.

When the One in Wylde Green opened up it was apparently the 8th in the chain at that time. Sutton Coldfield has 3 of them now. All of them are a rip off for food and alcohol.

I didn't realise they were a chain, and I've never set foot in one. Quick glance at the website and it seems they're decorated in the style of the Fighting Cocks in Moseley about 20 years ago.

We were chatting the other day about where to go for a bite to eat with the kids this weekend for my birthday, and she suggested that Dishoom in Brum, but I 've no interest whatsoever in eating in some 'hip' chain place.

Dishoom is pretty good to be fair.

I went to the one in Covent Garden in September - ridiculously big, insanely crowded - but somehow still very good.

Me and Purpletrousers went in there before the Bayern game, was decent enough.

The one a few minutes walk from me was the first one they opened outside Bristol in 2007. Still the place where I do my weekly pub quiz.

Middle-class Wetherspoons is a very good description.

I did the quiz there a few times, it was fun until the team 'Million Bears' decided to start going.  Professional quizzers they are and the team that sucked the fun out of it. Still quite funny though listening to the quiz-master trying to navigate his native tongue.

My mate always tells this story to every batch of new starters at work, and they always fall for it..

“When pub quizzes first took off, me and my mate used to go round  the country f doing  all of them. We earned a fortune in prize money because we won every single time. Ask me any general knowledge question you can think of and I guarantee I’ll be able to answer it”.

New starter: What’s the capital of France?

My pal: thinks for a bit, and then says - “my mate would have got that one”.

The Loco Lounge in Kings Heath was fine although the beer choice was, erm, limited. Ten years ago it had just about the best collection of staff I've ever come across in one pub, which is definitely why I liked it. Went down and up a bit since, but was usually okay. Just avoid parent and baby times and psychotic teachers letting rip on the last day of term.

I reckon Chris Heck could make a go of it, if he's allowed to focus all his time and effort there.

Professional quizzers are the worst.

I’ve been there a couple of times and agree completely about the staff. I took my cousin and his wife earlier this for some food and drinks in the afternoon. He hasn’t lived in this country for 20 years and was surprised to learn it was a chain pub as it doesn’t give out that vibe at all.
