I actually got to wrigley for the first time ever this year. Interesting park. I liked the area a lot and thought it was great.
It was a lot like Fenway, except somewhat less of a dump.
The Cubs have tried to copy what the Red Sox did at Fenway.
When I first went to Fenway (1997) and then Wrigley (1998) both ballparks were quite run down.
At the end of my 30 ballparks in 32 days trip back in 2000, I told a press conference at Cooperstown that I rated Wrigley the worst ballpark in terms of facilities / fan experience.
When the Red Sox new ownership came in, they opened up a lot more area inside Fenway for use by the fans by moving storage, offices etc offsite. They also embarked on an extensive maintenance program.
Meanwhile, the Cubs continued to operate on the "it's Wrigley, people will come anyway" basis and the ballpark got even more run down. It wasn't until after the concrete collapses of 2004 that the Cubs got serious about improving the ballpark. When I was last there in 2010, they'd made quite a bit of progress.
Did any of you ever get to old Tiger Stadium ? That was a great place to watch baseball. A mate and I managed to get a couple of seats in the upper deck right behind homeplate.
ie we were in the front row of this section
