Could do with a giant slugger in my garden. Bastard slimy things are eating everything in sight.
Hope he breaks the record.
Can't stand the bloke myself. Particularly when he spouts all that crap about people not wanting him to set a new record for home runs 'because of his skin colour'.

I'd like to see you face one of the top pitchers throwing at over 95mph and then call it rounders.
Baseball was based on the English game of rounders. Rounders become popular in the United States in the early 19th century, where the game was called "townball", "base", or "baseball". Cartwright formalized the modern rules of baseball

Quote from: "Tucson Villain"Thank God for Dan Haren.

I think that the combination of Haren and Webb, together with young hitters like Justin Upton, should allow the D'Backs to run away with the NL West.
I hoping he will battle through it because there is no doubt that he has talent and just like the rest of the line up he is trying to crush every ball to break himself out of the slump.
A couple of bloop singles here and there would do him the world of good.
If we only had to play the NL West I would agree with you but we are really struggling against any other team and inter-league play is killing us.
We also have to travel to Boston next week.

I'm trying to find out more about the rivalry between Chicago Cubs and Chicago Whitesox fans. I go onto a Chicago Bears Forum and it's funny to see the 2 sets of Baseball fans have a go at each other.
I'm not sure if there's a particular area where one set of fans come from and the others come from a separate area or not?
I went to the White Sox game against the Twins.
it had about 25,000 in there for an afternoon game in the middle of the week).
I have purposely not commented on the Cubs storming start to the season for fear of putting a curse on them, but what a start they have had.
We had a little slump the last couple of weeks with Soriano and Zambrano out, but now they are both pretty much back, we should be able to reaffirm our superiority, nnot only in our division, or our league, but over all of the MLB.
Rich Harden is a nice pick up for the Cubs.
They are going to take some stopping in the NL.
Wow a lot of Cubs and Red Sox players in the sides. Disappointed not to see any Angels players in the starting lineups, had a feeling Vlad may have made it.
I can understand the cubs players in the starting lineup being so far ahead in the NL Central but the Sox havent been amazing and are 4 games down on the Rays in the AL East! They are really going to have to deliver in the second half of the season to stand any chance of winning the division

I am a cubs fan, and I HATE the White Sox. Having lived in Chicago for 7 years, I know all about the rivalry. The divide is simple. If you live on teh north side of the river, you are a Cubs fan. If you live on the south side of the river, you are scum.
I am not so sure why I got into the whole rivalry thing, being English and all that, but it just happens once you attach yourself to one of the teams. Political candidates in the city have to be careful how they approach the rivalry too because if they show their colours to much they will lose votes. Mayor Daley and Governor Blagojovich did have a relatively friendly rivalry going on though at one time as the Mayor was a Cubbie and the Governor was a dumbass.
I never set foot in The Cell (The White sox stadium). I had the chance of free tickets on a couple of occassions, but I just could not bring myself to go there.
There is also another north / south divide in Chicago, and that is to do with how you prepare your hot dogs, but I will leave that for another time :-)
I can watch baseball, although I can't really say I support anyone (tend to support whoever's playing the Yankees at the time)
Did any of our US H&V'ers watch the team intros last night ?

I'm currently sat in New York Penn Station (First Class lounge, I'll have you know :- ) about to head up to Boston for two games at the legendary Fenway Park.
The last two days I've been at the Boston Red Sox @ New York Yankees games in da Bronx. Wow, what an atmosphere. Just like Villa v Blues (but maybe with more arrests).
Last night I headed straight from Yankee Stadium to Coney Island (90 mins on the NYC Subway system) for a Brooklyn Cyclones Minor League game.
If any of you are ever in the USA, check to see if the town/city you're in has a Minor League baseball team. Its a great evening's entertainment and very cheap. I paid just 14 dollars for the best seat in the ballpark.
I was at the thursday afternoon game. Great atmosphere, loads of (piss weak) beer and a reall good laugh.

I will also say that 'The New Yankee Stadium' looks amazing.

So now we have it, the Great American Scandal. Alex Rodriguez meets Steroids. Finally, we have an intersection of our soap operatic A-Rod obsession and the plague that infected our national pastime.
Here's how we should know that we've had enough: Some of us are starting to feel compassion for him. Don't know about the rest of you folks, but some of us out here have long since run out of outrage. It was long taken by everyone from Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens to Mark McGwire and Rafael Palmeiro. Now into the mix comes Rodriguez, a prototype for the psychologically and emotionally damaged megastar whose existence has played out before the American public like the life of Jim Carrey in "The Truman Show."
For the moment, here's the biggest problem: There reportedly were 103 other names on that list. Who are the others? Why don't we know? Is it even remotely possible that Rodriguez's name appears on a list with 103 utility men and bit players, that he is the only notable presence among a cast of extras and stand-ins?
Or has it reached the point now that we get to pick and choose whom we decide to smear, deconstruct and castigate?
Before anyone jumps to conclusions, nobody is suggesting that Rodriguez is innocent here. That's not the point. But he's not even close to being alone. Had the Boston Globe or New York Times or ESPN received the same information that Sports Illustrated received about Rodriguez failing a drug test during the 2003 season, we all would have printed it out of professional obligation. At the same time, we cannot help but wonder why certain sources selected Rodriguez's name from a list of 104 and streamlined it to the nation when 103 others effectively were ignored.
Here in Boston, save for the affair involving Patriots safety Rodney Harrison, we have been surprisingly immune from performance-enhancing crimes in the world of professional sports. (Harrison served a four-game suspension in 2007 after admitting that he used human growth hormone.) Even then, more than a few Englanders defended Harrison's actions by suggesting he was merely trying to recover from an injury so that he return to the field more quickly, apologists turning a blind eye to the sins of their own.
As for any transgressions that have taken place at Fenway Park, let's not fool ourselves. There must have been at least some deceit. When Major League Baseball released the Mitchell Report late in 2007, details included an e-mail from Theo Epstein concerning the possible steroid use of reliever Eric Gagne -- the Sox made a trade for Gagne anyway -- and a photocopy of a personal check written in 2001 by former Sox first baseman Mo Vaughn to known steroids dealer and former New York Mets clubhouse attendant Kirk Radomski. Vaughn declined to speak to Mitchell, and so we can only wonder if Vaughn was using performance enhancers during the 1995 and 1996 seasons, his peak years in Boston, which included one Most Valuable Player Award (1995).
In 2003, the year of Rodriguez's alleged steroid use, Rodriguez won the MVP. It was after that season that the Red Sox tried to trade for him. The results of testing conducted that season were intended to remain anonymous and were for the singular purpose of implementing a new testing policy. According to the SI report, a total of 1,198 players were tested, meaning that 8.8 percent were caught using some form of illegal substance. Know what 8.8 percent translates into? About two players per 25-man roster, about 3.5 players per 40-man. Keep that in mind before arguing that the Red Sox took the field with a cast of altar boys.
a good article from a boston writer (no seriously)
I've heard on DigitalSpy that the BBC have picked up the rights from five this year for the MLB.
I assume this would only relate to the highlight packages and the late night Sunday game but could be intresting! ESPN America still have all the other rights.
"A-Roid" faces the media (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/spring2009/columns/story?columnist=stark_jayson&id=3914265)
Not a great performance from Mr Madonna, yet another version of events and more new questions than answers.
If Alex and the Yankees thought that one press conference would get the media off the case, there's no chance of that now.
Though a 'discussion' programme raised the issue that the majority of fans are not rushing to the grounds burning their season tickets or protesting the injustice and unfairness of banned steroids. In fact it seems that they've accepted that this is a regular occurance.

Exactly. Is not stopping me spending far too much money to watch another ten games this season. In fact, all the steroid drama justs adds to my interest.
In that case, do you think there should be a complete lift on drugs in this sport and let everyone do what they like ?
An even playing field as such ?
I think this is the only other alternative as the current bans obviously don't work.
The problem with lifting bans is that possession of the drugs in question is itself illegal.
World Baseball Classic II just starting now on MLB.com
China @ Japan in the first game, with the next great pitching star "Yu Darvish" on the mound for Japan.
Who's ya got ?
On a change of topic, who should I support in Major League Baseball?
Is there any team that's a bit like Villa who have a glorious history but aren't worshipped-by-the-media-wankers like the Yankees (America's Man Ure)?
Are there any British or, better still, Brummie players in it?
If not, due to the Hispanic influence on the game, there must at least be a few players called Villa!
Cheers for advice.
I assume they are different conferences (like Jets/Giants) so I can follow both, or is that cheating?
Clevo is a bad choice.
Cleveland is not the first team to have a black player, and trust me, you will NEVER EVER EVER EVER- EVER want to go to cleveland for anything!
I have been on this site to try to decide (seeing as nasty pmarachi won't let me have two teams!)...
http://www.wikihow.com/Choose-a-Baseball-Team-to-Support
I think I am going to follow the advice and watch some games before deciding which team appeals to me.
Unfortunately, as I only tend to watch about one baseball match every three years this may take some time!
I have found out the American for "Glory-Hunter". It's "Front-Runner".
I will drop it casually into a H&V thread and see if anyone knows what I'm on about!
Well done to the Dutch team from Holland in the Netherlands. They only went and beat the Dominican Republic again last night, knocking their opponents out and booking themselves a surprising place in the next round.

It makes just as much sense as "The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim", which is a real Major League Baseball team.
It's like Wolves becoming "The Wolverhampton Wanderers of Birmingham"
An expansion franchise, the club was founded in Los Angeles in 1961. Then the Los Angeles Angels, the team was based at Los Angeles' Wrigley Field (not to be confused with Chicago's stadium of the same name). The team has gone through several name changes in their history, first changing to the California Angels in 1965 to emphasize their status as the only AL team in California. When The Walt Disney Company took control in 1997, it extensively renovated Angel Stadium on the condition that both the stadium's name and the team's name contain the word "Anaheim." Disney was hoping to capitalize on the proximity of nearby Disneyland to enhance the tourism in the area, and thus the team became the Anaheim Angels.
In 2005, new owner Arte Moreno wanted to include "Los Angeles" in the team's name, in order to better tap into the Los Angeles media market, the second largest in the country. In compliance with the terms of its lease with the city of Anaheim, the team changed its name to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Hotly disputed when initially announced, the change was eventually upheld in court and still stands as of 2008, though the team usually refers to itself as simply the Angels in its home media market.

The Rays do play in the "Tampa Bay Area", its just that they play in St Pete rather than Tampa.
If they were the "Tampa Rays" it'd be wrong but I think "Tampa Bay Rays" is technically correct.
Oh, I thought Tampa Bay was the actual town.
I thought they played in Diamonds.
I didn't realize that there was nothing.
That actually makes UK redsox knowledge of baseball even more impressive.
I am a big baseball fan and consider myself pretty up to par on baseball, but this guy, from England blows me out of the water...

You would be pretty hard pressed to find this final game on TV.
What's it going to be on? ESPN 6?
How did Scotland get on?
Been a Red Sox fan since the early 90s. I will get to Fenway one day, dammit!
I'll be at Fenway for 10 games in July. The first of those games will be the 200th Major League game that I've attended.

I live 30 minutes or less from Yankee stadium, Ihave had various season ticket packages over the last 5 years, and you have still probably been to more baseball games than I have...
Are you going to check out the new Yankee stadium when you come across?
I have 4 games planned there as of now, and I am sure I will go more once the initial "newness" of the stadium wears off and people are more willing to sell tickets at a reasonable price.
Probably spend quite a few games at Stan's Sports Bar across the street from the stadium...
Its 5 April 2009 and its opening day of the 2009 Major League Baseball season.
The first game is the Atlanta Braves @Philadelphia Phillies (live on Setanta and t'interweb but I don't think there's and terrestrial coverage)
So its time for the pre-season predictions...........
AL East - Rays
AL Central - Indians
AL West - Angels
AL Wild Card - Red Sox
NL East - Mets
NL Central - Cubs
NL West - Dodgers
NL Wild Card - Phillies
World Series - Dodgers over Indians

Fenway was the first ballpark I went to (back in 1997). Due to a cock up by the ticket booth (yep, back then you could just turn up and pay on the door) my seat location was moved to row 5, right behind home plate. I was closer to the batter than the pitcher was.

I really like Camden Yards. This year will be one of the few that I don't go there for a game.
I've been to Fenway Park, back in 1987, and also went to see the Twins play at home, forget the name of it, indoor stadium, the something Dome.
I wonder which MLB team is the closest to where I live.
This has prob been mentioned already, but am I right in thinking 5 aren't covering baseball anymore?
Even though I watched NASN more, still had a soft spot for 5. Mind, never the same since the Toddmeister left.
Hey pmarachi, where's the pics of the new Death Star ?

So, which is the best ballpark? Wrigley Field?
Everyone likes Camden yards the best.
The same people who did Camden Yards did yankee stadium.
I am telling you!
You need to get there!
You are only gonna be a 4 drive when you are in Boston!
It's worth it!
did you catch any of the yankee/sox game?!?!?!
WOW
it was a great game.
watching a Yankee/Sox game is annoying.
Joe Morgan is horrible.
I know that the media LOVES the redsox and everything, and I know that the yankees are like the "bad guys", but these commentators literally think the sox can do no wrong.
It has become so trendy to be a sox fan that it is really hard to watch them play.
what other stadiums are you going to on this trip?
Do you take photos of all of your trips?
This would make a great book. A guy from England comes to the US for the love of baseball, and documents the trips.

Also, isn't it funny that the Mitchell Report (made by someone with ties to the sox) didn't pick up on Manny juicing? The problem with that report for everyone who watches baseball is that you can't make a report like that if you have ties to a team. It just won't work...

A bit like a football team conceding a late penalty and kicking the ball out the ground to ensure time running out and it couldn't be taken. Leading to the introduction of the concept of injury time.

the problem with baseball is there is too many teams and not enough real talent.
Quote from: "pmarachi"the problem with baseball is there is too many teams and not enough real talent.
I don't buy the "too many teams argument"
There's over 300 million people in the USA. (Add to that, the rest of North/Latin American and Japan.)
Even allowing for the females in the total, that's plenty large enough a pool to find 750 Major League calibre players
I don't think there are enough players to have enough good teams. Case in point, look at how bad the last place teams are every year.
We don't have a relegation of any kind, so there is no penalty for being the worst team year after year.
The Pirates are gonna be in the MLB next year no matter what.
Maybe my argument is misplaced. Maybe it's not the players, but maybe its certain teams, that don't have ownership that wants to win.
Two years ago, Florida got more money in the luxury tax payouts than they spent on their entire payroll (this team never does too bad, but thats in SPITE of the ownership and not because of it).
FINALLY!!!

Having met Joe, he seems like a nice guy (albeit a bit difficult to talk to due to his crossed-eyes). He was also one of the all time great second basemen. However, as a commentator he's truly horrible, unwilling to embrace changes to the sport, getting facts wrong, bringing every story back to himself and, as in the above case, embellishing his involvement in events.

All-Star game tonight. Watched the HR Derby yeaterday and the old gits/celeb game. Billy Bob Thornton played like he was 80, those nights with Angelina must have taken it out of him.
I actually got bored of the HR Durby, it went on for some 3 hours so I stopped paying any attention to it. It wasfunnywhen they let that girl get on 1st so as she could backflip steal 2nd, but she only looks about 14! There were a couple ofblonde softball players who looked hot. And Nelly doing his best Andruw Jones flipcatch trick.
What annoys me the most, is that if the Yankess could have split the 8 games with the sox, we would be 6 games ahead in first instead of 2.
It's the race to see who DOESN'T have to play the Angels.
To sum it up, it is a no hitter, where NO ONE touches base. That means no one walks or gets hit with a pitch either.
Quote from: "pmarachi"

I assume that's a typo and you meant to say "perfect game".
"No-hitters" can have loads of people reach first base via walks (Nolan Ryan's no-hitters are prime examples) or errors.
Given the circumstances that was some catch by Dewayne Wise in the 9th
For those that are interested in seeing the game, it'll be shown on ESPN America (Sky 417) at noon today at at 2pm tomorrow.
What I was trying to say is that it is a no hitter (so think of what makes up a no hitter, then add to that), NO ONE touches base.
So, it is a No Hitter, EXCEPT that no one touches base. (maybe that is more clear).
Cheers folks, so it was pretty special then.
Has there ever been a game when both pitchers have pitched no-hitters? Or even come close?
Quote from: "Dave Cooper"Cheers folks, so it was pretty special then.
Has there ever been a game when both pitchers have pitched no-hitters? Or even come close?
IIRC it's nigh on impossible as the odds are high that if both pitched no hitters the score would be 0-0 after 9 innings and would go into extra innings, so it wouldn't qualify as a complete game as relief pitchers would appear at some stage. If that makes sense and I remember everything right. I'm sure there have been pitchers who pitched 9 hitless innings but don't have a no hitter given them as the score finished 0-0. I'm so glad I started trying to explain, i'm confusing myself now.
No-hitters in a losing cause
Unlike a perfect game, in which no batters reach base, in regular no-hitters batters can reach base in other ways, such as a walk, an error, or a hit batsman. Thus it is possible to lose a no-hitter. On April 23, 1964, Ken Johnson of the Houston Colt .45s became the only pitcher to lose a complete game no-hitter in nine innings when he was beaten 1-0 by Cincinnati. The winning run was scored by Pete Rose in the top of the ninth inning via an error, groundout, and another error. In 1967, Steve Barber and Stu Miller of the Baltimore Orioles pitched a combined no-hitter, but lost 2-1 to the Detroit Tigers.
Because the home team does not bat in the ninth inning when it is already leading, a visiting pitcher (or pitchers) may complete a full game without allowing a hit but not be credited with an official no-hitter because they pitched only 8 innings. This happened most recently on June 28, 2008, when Jered Weaver and José Arredondo of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim threw 8 no-hit innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium, but lost the game 1-0 and are not credited with a no-hitter. This is the first near no-hitter of this kind in which more than one pitcher was involved. Previously, Silver King (1890), Andy Hawkins (1990), and Matt Young (1992) pitched complete games without allowing a hit, but pitched only 8 innings as the losing pitcher from the visiting team, and thus are not credited with a no-hitter.
Grand slam = home run with someone on all the bases right?
I have decided I'm an Orioles fan, 'cause we were in Maryland last year and my surname begins with an O'S and they are the O's. Unfortunately we didn't get to go to a game while we were over, but hopefully next time.
Baltimore Orioles because it sounds a bit rude.
Ortiz - with some help in the phrasing, but this is doubtlessly him - issues a statement of confession:
"One, I have already contacted the Players Association to confirm if this report is true. I have just been told that the report is true. Based on the way I have lived my life, I am surprised to learn I tested positive. Two, I will find out what I tested positive for. And, three, based on whatever I learn, I will share this information with my club and the public. You know me -- I will not hide and I will not make excuses."
Meanwhile MLB.Com quotes Ramirez, before the Dodgers-Cards in St. Louis:
"If you guys want to talk about the game and what happens now, I can sit and talk for two hours. But something happened six years ago, I don't want to talk about that. If you want more information, you have the number for the union. Call them."

If that makes sense and I remember everything right. I'm sure there have been pitchers who pitched 9 hitless innings but don't have a no hitter given them as the score finished 0-0. I'm so glad I started trying to explain, i'm confusing myself now.
This is true, but there is always the slight possibility that this could happen (no hitter, not a perfect game) and the winning run could get walked in.
You may lose 1-0, but there was no H
I doubt it has ever happened though.
Also, if it is 9 innings in, and you haven't given up a hit yet, there is NO WAY anyone is taking you out of a game.
On September 9, 1965, Koufax became the sixth pitcher of the modern era to throw a perfect game, the first by a left-hander since 1880. The game was Koufax's fourth no-hitter, setting a Major League record (subsequently broken by Nolan Ryan). Koufax struck out 14 batters, the most recorded in a perfect game. The game also featured a quality performance by the opposing pitcher, Bob Hendley of the Cubs. Hendley pitched a one-hitter and allowed only two batters to reach base. Both pitchers had no-hitters intact until the seventh inning.
In one of baseball's great statistical and score-keeping anomalies, this has been the only nine-inning major league game where both teams combined for one hit. The game's only run, scored by the Dodgers, was unearned. The Dodger run was scored without a recorded at bat—Lou Johnson walked, reached second on a sacrifice bunt, stole third, and scored when the throw to get him out at third went wild
oh, they played last night?
I must have missed it....
was it a good game?
How did Texeria do? The guy who the Sox GM said was now cursing the yankees. The one on the all star team.
Advice for Kevin Youkilis:
If you decide to charge the mound at a pitcher who is half your weight, don't let him turn the tables on you and throw you on your ass. Also, never, never throw your helmet at the pitcher when you are charging.
HAHAHAHA
In my opinion, the draft system is a restraint of trade. I'm amazed that it hasn't been overturned by legal action.
I have to be honest, I love the idea of a draft.
I think it helps to keep the playing field level.
If there was no draft every year the top prospects would go to the Yankees, Dodgers, Mets and Redsox.
This allows for the smaller teams to compete as well.
And congratulations to the Pittsburgh Pirates on their 17th consecutive losing season
Twitter has decided to act after Tony La Russa, the coach of an obscure American baseball team, launched a legal action over a fake account. He claimed that postings in which he appeared to make light of the death of two of his players had been ‘hurtful’.
I can't remember... did I ever get round to picking a team to support?
I want a team that's not particularly fashionable but still not complete shite and has a long and proud history, a bit like Da Bears and Villa. Preferably it should be one that hasn't relocated 75 times.
Any ideas?
Just reading above, about Pittsburgh's lengthy bad run of form. Does baseball have a draft and salary cap to try to prevent the same teams winning / losing every year?
I don't want somebody completely rubbish though! The Red Sox seem a bit to successful and popular for my liking.
I'm quite tempted by the Brewers cos their name makes me think of beer. Are they any good?

Eliminating the Yankees and Redsox as too popular, and eliminating the Dodgers and Giants as teams that moved (although they aren't moving again), you have few choices.
I would consider:
The Angels
The Mets
The Cubs
The White Sox
I believe their fans like to invade the field and attack umpires and players.

The Brewers are reasonably good (in fact very good last year), with a great ballpark and fans (one of my best friends is a season ticket holder).
They also have the greatest baseball broadcaster of them all
Not to mention the Sausage Race

Maybe just your top 3 as a "stadiums to go to before you die" type thing.

I do own a Yankees top. But then again I am a Yankees fan.
To my defence I didn't know all about the history when I started supporting them.[/quote]
There is nothing wrong with the Yankees history, wear that top proudly.
We have the best owner in the game and possibly the ONLY owner in all of sports that truly cares more about winning than making money.
We aren't a Johnny-come-lately team as much as anyone likes to think so. We may actually be the opposite of that and the most hated team in sports. The kind of team other fans hate, but other players want to play for.
We are hated for our passion and for winning too much, while Aryan Nation over in Boston is applauded for being "the peoples team" and routinely do the things they accuse the yankees of (highest beer prices, parking prices, etc.)
We are classy. Plain and Simple.
And by the way, in America, we have front runners and girls wearing baseball hats that can't name a player.
but we just call them Redsox fans
p.s. The hats are usually PINK!
p.s #2 UK REDSOX Don't get mad! haha

All I can say pm is i've followed the Red Sox since 97 when we got live baseball on TV here in the UK.
I chose the Red Sox because it seemed they had a great history but shite present and always seemed to cock it up when the big chance came. Made them sound like the Villa so they became my team. Those were the days where Mo Vaughn was the star.
I fully expected to never see them win the World Series.
I've no doubt people have latched onto the Red Sox success, especially in the US (glory hunters if you like) but the Yankees have had that in the UK for as long as i've been following baseball so it's hardly unique.
hey, guys...
Just s you know, I am joking.

Oh now. that just HAS to be a gay euphemism.
I like baseball a lot but one thing confuses me, how can they play games like the Phillies yesterday, starting at lunchtime and get a full house.
Can people in the States really get time off work that easy ?
If in football you had a lunchtime KO in the working week we would barely get 20k at VP
Ted Williams' frozen head used for batting practice (http://www.examiner.com/x-5585-Offbeat-News-Examiner~y2009m10d7-Frozen-Ted-Williams-head-allegedly-used-for-batting-practice)
The book says the head in the deep freeze was balanced on an empty can of Bumble Bee brand tuna to keep it from sticking to the bottom of its case.
Once, an Alcor employee tried to remove the head from the can by swinging at it with a monkey wrench. The technician missed the can but smacked Williams' head spraying "tiny pieces of frozen head" around the lab, the book says.

I don't do ironic, I thought I read somewhere that was true but happy to stand corrected.
Somewhere along the way (the earliest citing I've found so far is from 1991), people have picked up the notion that the fall classic, baseball's World Series, is so named not because the victors are considered the world's champions, but because the contest was originally sponsored by the New York World newspaper. Perhaps this belief springs from today's hyper-commercial sporting climate, in which nearly all athletic championships and sports stadiums are named for corporate sponsors, or perhaps it springs from the incongruity of the winners of a contest featuring only teams from North America being declared "world champions," but so prevalent is this erroneous belief that it is now regularly cited as a "fact," despite a complete lack of any supporting evidence.
The New York World never had anything to do with the World Series, however, other than being one of the many newspapers to report the results.

A classic myth of the internet age.
No doubt when the 2009 "World Series" begins the Telegraph and BBC (two organisations who I've moaned at previously) will spout the same "myth" one more.

Not exactly sure what this means... will they be kicked out of the league or re-locate, or does it depend who buys the team?

I may root for a particular team, but I don't root against a team.
As a Yankee fan, I have a little class.
Yankees have a 3-1 lead with 3 to play then. Phillies can seal their second consecutive place in the World Series later tonight.
Phillies-Yankees would be dandy
I watched the Yankees at the Angels last night. Have to say (IMO) the Angels were on the receiving end of some very dodgy refereeing decisions. Bit like watching the Villa really.
Logically, it's looking very much like a Yankees/Phillies World Series, though.
Then when he scored they took the run away and said he didn't tag up. Which replay shows he definitely did.
Didn't tag up? I mean just say "We made the wrong call earlier and so we didn't want to count the run"
yeah, the umpiring was terrible, but lets not act like it was one way favring the yankees.
Yay Phils.
It seems that concrete problems in new stadiums are common.
I was at Comerica in Detroit just a few weeks after the ballpark opened and there was crumbling concrete in several places.
I read a big article about it a year or so ago.
I wonder if when Joe Girardi decided to use almost every pitcher in the bulllpen in an already ut of reach game if someone tapped him on the shoulder and said "hey Joe, you know we play tomorrow too, right?"
The guy is horrible.
Even with all the wins, we would have more with pretty much any other manager.
It looks like pmarachi's Highlanders are heading towards the title.
It doesn't look like even A-Rod can balls this up now

I know full well that A-Rod was having a great postseason. However, he (according to ESPNRadio) then became the first player ever to strike out three times in each of the first three games of the World Series.
BTW, I'm a big A-Rod fan back from his days in Seattle (I have the replica jersey to prove it) and would have be very pleased if he had joined the Red Sox (as he wanted to do before the Players' Union vetoed the deal).
He also seems more relaxed and not so image conscious now that his drug use is out in the open. He doesn't have to worry about appearances now and can concentrate on crushing the ball like he did for the Mariners.
Why so jumpy ?
And the rumor is the Mets asked for info on Matsui. Nt sure why they would though...
No doubt you're all paying close attention to the off season baseball moves but just in case there's a few who aren't, here's a summary

One of the good things about being here in Oz is that when they show the MLB over here it's at a reasonable hour (lunchtime) so I'm starting to get back into it again.
Watched the Rays/Mariners game yesterday - Seattle not doing too well at the moment it seems!
Excellent pitching was ok until the 8th, then they replaced Cliff with someone else and he was fucking useless.

Going to a game Tuesday night Cubs v Rockies at Wrigley Field, Chicago, looking forward to it.
With regard to the Braden/A-Rod incident.
I'm struggling to see what A-Rod did wrong.
If Braden had actually been stood on the mound it might have been different.
The problem is that A-Rod has broken so many "written rules" .........
eg, slapping the ball out of Arroyo's hand, which was rightly called as interference.
eg, yelling to distract the Blue Jays fielder during a game I was at in Toronto.
........ that he'll never get the benefit of the doubt regarding "unwritten rules".
Going to a game Tuesday night Cubs v Rockies at Wrigley Field, Chicago, looking forward to it.
A-Rod is a prick, pure and simple. He should know better as those "unwritten rules" have a long and established position in baseball. That being said, some players (and I personally) don't agree with all of them. I've been having a big debate about when bunting is "allowed" during a perfect/No Hitter game. I feel like it's always allowed and the pitcher/team needs to earn every out. But some feel it's bad form. I guess each their own.

This Braden guy is annoying. First he attacks arod and acts ike a baby over a made up rule, then he acts like "I showed him!" when he pitched a perfect game.
The thing is, Arod never had a beef with him. The beef was ALWAYS Braden going after Arod.
Why? He was trying to make a name for himself.
Well he pitched a perfect game, and now he has a name for himsef, so what des he do? He attacks Arod MORE?!?!?!
What a hack.
two things:
1) He wouldn't have done this to Jeter. HE picked on Arod because he knew it was easy as Arod is disiked all over the league. it's ike shooting a deer in a cage.
2) He pitched a perfect game and that is great, but did anyone see it? 68 mph fastballs? Only 9 swinging strikes (I'm pretty sure it was 9, may have been 6)? more bats on balls than any game this year? Sounds like he may owe a thank you to the fielders doesn't it?

ummm
I never heard of this particular unwritten rule and payers calling all the stations said the same thing. Never heard the "rule".
The reason you have never seen a player do it before is because with dugouts diagnolly placed, the only chance for this to happen is when a plalyer needs to go from third to first, which is essentially never.
But I am down with this. People who want to have a go at Arod are going to doo it no matter what.
The guy threw a temper tantrum because he wanted attention.
As for bunting, I think it IS "allowed" in a no hitter, because bunting is essentially about advancing a runner, and the player runs the 50/50 shot of being tagged out.
That being said, if I was a player, I wouldn't be comfortable doing it in the 8th or the 9th inning in a no hitter. You are gonna get a lot of flack for it, and if the game isn't on the line, do you really need to?
I remember a few years ago, and I forget who they were playing, but the Phillies own Jimmy Rollins had his base hit streak going and he had not had a hit in this particular game, and he had walked twice. Well it was his last at bat, and the pitcher was intentionally walking him. Threw out two balls, real wide. Again, I foroget who the manager was, but the manager came out to the mound and told the pitcher to throw a strike and give the guy a chance to at least hit the ball.
Jimmy did get that hit btw.

There's been a lot of attention on the Yankees' "core four" this year.
Jeter and Mo are clearly first-ballot HOF'ers. Any one who doesn't vote for them should have their voting rights revoked.
As for Andy and Jorge, the case is not quite do clear cut but I'd still say "yes" to both of them.

Jeter is a legend and I can't think of a single player I would have ahead of him over the last 10 years. Even when there was ARod, Nomar and Jeter battling it out for best AL shortstop I would of had him above all of them. Just because he leads the team so well.
Mo is the hammer of God. I dont think anyone will ever be as successful with essentially one pitch! everyone knows whats coming but no one seems to be able to handle it.
Andy's post season record is great and for a player who has never really been an ace he is a great game 2 guy.
Jorge has had to compete with first Girardi to get into the team then with Pudge and Varitek to be the best catcher.

You coming to see our new Death Star this year?
Yep, two Mariners @ Highlanders games at the end of next month
I'm just watching ESPN and it the Yankees Vs The Twins, Pettite is pitching and it reminded me of a discussion I had with 2 mates of mine after the last world series 1 of them is a Cubs fan the other is a White Sox fan.
Andy Pettite hall of famer or not?
We all came to the conclusion he has got to be mainly on his post season record 4 rings etc..
What does everyone else think?

I don't think he makes it. The rings are nice, but his ERA of 3.89 would be the worst in the HOF. He does have over 2,000 Ks and over 232 wins though. I guess it will depend on if he sticks around a little longer. 250+ wins would really help his case.

if he could pull a 15 win season at his age, that would be great.
Getting above 250 is going to be hard.
I don't want to have the "everyone did it" argument. If you have been found to have definitely taken a PED, I don't think you should be there.

What is a Perfect Game?
Quote from: "VillaSubmariner"What is a Perfect Game?
Ooh, ooh! Miss. I know this Miss.
It's when a pitcher gets all the batters out without a single one of them even getting to first base.
Three up. three down in every innings.
That's right isn't it?

Incredibly, there should have been another "Perfect Game" yesterday but the umpire mistakenly called the last batter safe at First Base

YOU ROYALS!!!

Congratulations to Bryce Harper on being the number one selection in the 2010 MLB draft (http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20100607&content_id=10914964&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb)
He was selected by the Washington Natinals*, who had first pick because they had the worst record last season. He'll now be sent to the Minor Leagues
I still don't understand how such drafts are legal. They're clearly "restraint of trade"
This would be the equivalent in England of say, the next Wayne Rooney (aged 16 but clearly ready to play at the highest level), ready to sign his first pro contract and being told sorry you can't sign for Everton, you have to sign for Portsmouth and they'll then lend you to Brentford for a couple of years.
Also, because Harper is American and thus subject to the draft system, he'll be paid probably only 20% of what an equivalent Latin American player or Cuban defector might get.
The Natinals* had the first pick last year as well. That player, pitcher Stephen Strasburg, will make his Major League debut tonight. This has probably been the most hyped debut in baseball history.
Strasburg was clearly the Natinals* best pitcher in Spring Training and ready to start in the Majors straight away. However, he was kept in the Minor Leagues until now in order to reduce the amount of money the Natinals* have to pay him.
* and yes, the "o" has been deliberately left out by me (but not by them)
Stephen Strasburg - Do believe the hype !!
14 strikeouts in a debut win (http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20100608&content_id=10944784&vkey=recap&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb)
I didn't think that there was any way that Strasburg could live up to the hype that preceded his debut, but he did.
Fourteen strikeouts is impressive at any stage of a career but, on a debut ? That's unheard of.
He was hitting 101mph on the radar gun at times and his curveball was a thing to behold. Spectacular

He was indeed impressive. I won't reserve his HOF spot though until he pitches against an actual good team as the Pirates are horrible.

UkRedsox, You went to the new stadium...
So, no pictures? No comments? I am shocked!
Well see you tonight.
sometimes I feel like the movement of this particular thread to the "sports" section and away from off topic marked it's demise.
I've been at three Giants @ Brewers games this week.
I love Miller Park but the Brewers stinks.......... stink !!
I leave tomorrow for Chicago and the final two games of my trip (Royals @ White Sox)
Do we have any Chicago Cubs fans ?
If so, my commiserations, you team stinks....... stinks !!
I was at their 14 - 3 demolition by Cincinnati yesterday. The Reds hit 9 home runs !
so, I have a work trip to Boston next week and they sent us the agenda. I finally read it and saw this:
"Please note that on Tuesday, July 20 we have planned an exciting off site dinner event at Fenway Park. Be sure to bring your camera as you will have the opportunity to meet some Major League Baseball Legends and also explore Fenway Park!"
It's like a double edged sword. As a baseball fan, part of me is excited.
But the thought of meeting a "former great redsox" makes me sick to my stomach and my soul...

Colvin was coming home from third on Welington Castillo's RBI double, watching the ball in flight, when the sharp part of the broken bat hit him in the chest, inches from his heart and jugular vein. He swatted away the bat, which did not stick, and was treated immediately in the dugout.
Colvin was listed in stable condition Sunday night in the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. A tube was inserted into his chest to prevent a collapsed lung. He'll remain hospitalized for two or three days, and his promising rookie season is over. The Cubs said he was fortunate to elude a much more serious injury.

Urgh, the Yankees and Phillies are in title games again... I loathe both teams, especially Jason Werth and Phil Hughes. Please let it be Rangers vs Giants in the WS, it will be a pitching-dual, no-one wants to see the Yankees win another WS...

No one cares about the rangers
I would love a Giants/Yankees WS. That would be cool.
But I have a feeling it's texas/phillies...
Bronx Bombers? More like Bronx Babies... the only bombers in da Bronx are the Rangers.
I fully expect the yankees to lose tonight by the way.
I really want SF to win the WS (I'm assuming NYY don't make it). I also want Lincecum to come out to the mound with his hair in corn rows with the song "I Feel Like Making Love" blaring from the sound system. that would be amazing.
lol, don't blow all your money on the Rangers home games in the World Series. Save your money for next season. How many times do you go and watch baseball games in America each year?
Ah, sounds good. Travelling through different states is one of my favourite things to do... I did a roadtrip with a mate in the summer starting out from NC all the way down to Miami stopping in some great cites and towns along the way, went to Braves game too which was cool.lol, don't blow all your money on the Rangers home games in the World Series. Save your money for next season. How many times do you go and watch baseball games in America each year?
I'm normally Stateside twice a season. Once for a few games in Boston and then later on I meet up with some mates for a couple of weeks travelling round to various ballparks.
I also used to do an NFL/MLB/NCAA combo trip in September (one of which was 15 games in 11 days. 4x NFL, 2x NCAA Football and 9x MLB)
Of course Joe Buck would use that line. What a tit.
Madison Bumgarner? Seriously?
Jon Miller and Joe Morgan's 21-year run on ESPN's "Sunday Night Baseball" is over.
Morgan's contract is expiring and he will not be renewed. Miller's contract is also expiring though he may remain at ESPN working the "Sunday Night Baseball" series and postseason baseball for ESPN Radio.
I used to enjoy their commentary, especially in the early days of C4 coverage. Despite at the time being new to the game, for the most part I could follow what they were on about. I reckon that they, and of course the legend that is Todd Macklin, are a big reason baseball got a decent following in this country.
I expect that Youk will now move back to Third Base and Beltre's days in Boston are over.

• Dave Concepcion (8 votes, 50 percent)
• Fewer than 8 votes: Ted Simmons, Vida Blue, Steve Garvey, Ron Guidry, Tommy John, Billy Martin, Al Oliver, Rusty Staub and George Steinbrenner.
Cliff Lee to the Nats now?! What on earth is going on lol. I heard his wife hates New York fans for some reason.
I never want to hear a redsox fan ever say the yankees "buy their championships"
BTW, quick quiz question:
Last year only ONE team had more homegrown players than the Yankees. Who was that team?
Oh and don't laugh, i'm a big Cubs fan.. I went to Wrigley 10 years ago and have loved them ever since, I haven't made it yet but the drive to Chicago is 15 hours away, I keep trying to convince the wife we should go for the shopping! ;)
Cubs are a cool team to follow. It will make it that much better when they win.
I am planning on bringing my son to the stadium for the first time this year. He is really excited. He's 2.5 years old and ALL he talks about is "Me and daddy are going to YANKEE STADDDDDDIUUUUUM".
It's great. He even carries around a picture.
The only question now is, do I put him in a good seat, or use the ticket package I get in the bleachers...
Might as well go all in and throw him into the bleachers, right?

Welcome to the thread and commiserations on being a Cubs fan. I've sure things will work out one of these centuries.
You were at Wrigley ten years ago and liked it ?!? (or were you so beered up, you didn't notice that it was a dump ?)
If you work your way thro' this thread you'll see that, originally, Wrigley wasn't one of my favourite ballparks (and making a comment to that effect nearly had me run out of a press conference I was giving in Cooperstown).
However, in the last couple of years they at last seem to me doing some maintenance and making the most of what they have, rather than just relying on the "wow" factor.
Not long now until "Pitchers & Catchers" and the start of a season that will obviously end in a Red Sox versus Phillies World Series.
As for Wrigley, I had been to a few ballparks and they all seemed so sterile, I loved the feel of the place, the stadium and it was a day game (a doubleheader against the Dodgers all for $10) the atmosphere, the stands reminded me of the old trinity and it was a true american tradition. I'm sure Fenway has a similar character that cannot be transferred into the new ballparks, and that is what I love about baseball... you are watching the game in the same surrounding as it was years ago. Next time you go to Chicago give it another chance, i'm sure it will be more enjoyable for you.

I've been to Wrigley the last two seasons and there's definitely an improvement in the way that the place is being looked after.
I see that the kid killed in the Tucson shootings was Dallas Green's granddaughter
Was her Grandfather the scout for the Dodgers?

Why do so many baseball players take drugs? Surely the game is about timing and natural talent more than raw speed? Obviously I can work out why competitors roid up in cycling or athletics.
First workouts for Pitchers & Catchers today.
Albert and his agent have stuck to their deadline and called of talks for the season.
Apparently, the Cards' offer to Pujols was below the amount paid to A-Rod, Mauer, CC, Ryan Howard and Cliff Lee.
St Louis are taking a real risk here. Albert could quite easily end up with the Cubs if the Cards act cheap
The media over here keeps mentioning Pujols coming to the Cubs if nothing happens with the Cards, do you think they have linked them together because of the rivalry and to put the Cards front office under pressure or can you see him actually playing in the North Side of Chicago?
I'd be happy if he came North but can't see it happening!

They haven't had a 'winning' season in 15 years. Winning = won more games than they lost.
Message to a certain team in Boston... "THE SEASON'S FECKING STARTED !!"
A Phillies fan, a Mets fan, & a Yankees fan are climbing a mountain & arguing about who loves his team more.
The Mets fan insists he is the most loyal. He shouts ''This is for the Mets!'' & jumps off the mountain.
Not to be outdone, the Philllies fan is next to profess his love for his team. He shouts "This is for the Phillies!!!" & pushes the Yankees fan off the mountain.
Ta, what's 'BB' though?
Hitting the batter gives a walk as well doesn't it? Does that come under 'BB'?
Sounds like a leg bye. The BB comes after 4 balls doesn't it? (so long as they're not in the box thing).Hitting the batter gives a walk as well doesn't it? Does that come under 'BB'?
Kind of - hitting the batter is called a "hit by pitch" (HBP) or "hit batsmen" (HB) - and you get to go to first base like a walk.
The BB comes after 4 balls doesn't it? (so long as they're not in the box thing).
Boston 0 - 6, that is not good... come on Red Sox don't give the Yankees the pennant that easily.
Phillies 11 - 0 Mets
Made me day.
With Doc pitching, that was 10 runs more than they required

2 and fecking 10 !!
I'm going to have some serious words with the Boston nine when I see them in a couple of weeks
Not that it would happen but if they both went down and ended up in the same jail they would have a great ball team.
Time for the Phillies to get rid of Blanton.
Now, live from Boston Masserchewsex, its Ulysses Karl Redsox ............
This evening will be game number one out of eight of my annual pilgramage to Fenway Park as the Sox entertain Ichiro Suziki and the Seattle Mariners. However before that I'm going to hop on the "T" and go to Northeastern University's game against William & Mary (in keeping with today's Royal theme on H&V).
Bobby Jenks stinks...... stinks !!
The Sox were pretty awful, relying on two homers by reserve outfielder Mike Cameron, to get a lead only for Dice-K to go down injured and then for Jenks to blow the game.
Watching Ichiro is always great. He now has over 3500 hits when combining his career in Japan and the USA and is a lock for the Hall of Fame.
The game at Northeastern was far more entertaining.
Its Virginia @ Boston College this afternoon followed by more stress at Fenway tonight
They will turn it around, the locals won't stand for it for too long and they will bring in someone new.

"Why is everyone making such a big deal? The best thing Jorge has done for the team this year was to take himself out of the f#$%ing lineup"
Red Sox vs the Cubs this weekend, any predictions UK Redsox?
Well I think the sox will win 2-1 in the series,
Wish I had been wrong, did you see Byrd getting beaned in the face?
All right people, we got 10 minutes 'till game time, let's all gather 'round. I'm not much for giving inspirational addresses, but I'd just like to point out that every newspaper in the country has picked us to finish last. The local press seems to think that we'd save everyone the time and trouble if we just went out and shot ourselves. Me, I'm for wasting sportswriters' time. So I figured we ought to hang around for a while and see if we can give 'em all a nice big shitburger to eat!

There's nothing anywhere near me.
If I'd had the chance to play as a kid (which I might have done if Rank Xerox had had a different policy about sending employee's families Stateside), I'd have been a slugging 1B/DH well on my way to Cooperstown by now

The Sox @ Highlanders series is going well so far.
Tonight its CC against Beckett. Therefore, I'm not expecting the high scoring games of the last two nights to be repeated.
Tomorrow I'm off to Philly for a couple of games
I'm now Sat in Philly station about to head to Balmer to meet some friends for a week of Minor League games in Maryland and Virginia.

Yes, I said the Pirates are above .500.
I read this morning that the Phillies were playing Seattle.....and thought for a second, "When did the Pilots come back?"

Jeter gets into the line up because he is Derek Jeter.
Jeter gets into the line up because he is Derek Jeter.
Why don't they go on the best stats, instead of the most popular system.
Q. Has anyone ever reached 3,000 hits before Derek Jeter?
A. No. No one has ever done it. Ever. Except for the 27 other guys who did it.
Q. Doesn't Derek Jeter's tenure with the Yankees exemplify the kind of loyalty rarely seen in sports these days?
A. Yes. Derek Jeter has played for the Yankees and only for the Yankees for 16 years. He has regularly turned down offers to play for less elsewhere. He selflessly accepted a near record-setting 10-year, 180 million dollar contract (during which time he led the Yankees to a single World Series title). And when that contract was over, he showed great charity and generosity by forcing the Yankees to overpay him again.
Q. Is Derek Jeter the greatest Yankee ever?
A. Unquestionably. No other Yankee held significant records before Jeter (if you exclude home runs, games-played-in-a-row, hit streaks, etc). And they didn't really win much before him.
Q. How important is Jeter's gentlemanly behavior off the field?
A. Very. Derek Jeter hasn't been involved in a single embarrassing marital episode. Not one. If Derek Jeter has taught us one thing, it is the true nobility in not ever getting married. Hear that boys and girls?
Q. Isn't Jeter the glue that holds the Yankees together?
A. Absolutely. And that glue has such residual adhesiveness that when he was injured this year, and unable to take the field, the Yankees played their best baseball of the season. That is some awesome glue.
Q. As Captain, hasn't he established an extraordinarily high standard for sportsmanship in the clubhouse?
A. Yes. At a minimum, until a verdict is reachedin the Clemens trial, it is absolutely true to say no Yankee has ever been convicted of lying to Congress about taking steroids and HGH. And under Jeter's leadership, no Yankee has refused to play for two games in a row.
Q. Is this record more significant because Jeter is a Yankee, and the Yankees represent something special to America?
A. Yes. If you have never been out of New York, it is totally reasonable to think people outside New York are obsessed with the Yankees. America LOVES them (if by America you mean New York, north Jersey and Connecticut south of Hartford.) And relatively speaking (relative to being punched in the throat), people outside New York do not resent the overwhelmingly disproportionate coverage given to the Yankees.
(Disclaimer: The author actually thinks Derek Jeter is really good baseball player, and a first ballot Hall of Famer. He just hears a bit too much about the guy every now and then)

But Jeter gets 3000 with a home run, fair play but I still don't like 'em.
Weird... why would you not like him?
I can understand not caring about him, saying he isn't the player he was, or saying you hate how good he was against your team he was in his prime...
But I don't understand how you can have something against him.

Because he's Derek Jeter and he plays for the Evil Empire. What more reason do we need.
However, in my case its more jealousy rather than dislike
I was in NYC yesterday, the billboards were awash with Jeter 3000 stuff, I had no idea what it was all about until I watched ESPN last night, had a quick read of this & Google'd Derek Jeter.
So from what I can gather he has only ever played for the damned Yankees, started his career in MLB in 1995 & is the first Yankee ever to reach 3000 hits. So in 16 seasons, 162 games per season thats 2592 games he could have played in. With 9 innings in each of those 2592 games thats the opportunity to hit the ball some 23328 times assuming the ball was pitched at him only the once, which is highly unlikely so lets give him the benefit of the doubt and say it was twice making the 'opportunity' 46656 times to hit the ball.
Jeter hit it 3000 times out of a possible 46,656.
Bit crap really isn't he?

Watched the Yankees game downtown last night, the Mariners went down again in the Bronx, 17 losses on the trot now, probably 18 by the end of this evening.

Meanwhile, my Red Sox go from strength to strength.
Thank God and the baby Jesus for that, the Cubs dismiss Jim Hendry after 9 years as an awful GM... I hope this means we get a decent guy now!
Watched a bit of the little league world series yesterday.
Quite entertaining.

What the fuck are the Red Sox doing? Bloody hell.
This is shaping up to be the biggest regular season collapse of all time
However, even though they lost again yesterday, thanks to the Rays losing a double-header to the Highlanders, the Sox actually increased their Wild Card lead to 2.5 games
Didn't the Mets blow a really big lead a few years ago with something like 15 games left, they lost 14?
2007 Mets miss playoffs
What the math says: 499-to-1 against. The Mets' playoff probability peaked at 99.80 percent after the action of Sept. 12, when they held a 7-game lead over the Phillies with 16 games to play, and some favorable wild-card permutations as a backup.
Aggravating circumstances: Willie Randolph's clubhouse imploding; for better or for worse, this team will be used for quite some time as the example of the importance of clubhouse chemistry. Most of the damage came at the hands of the lowly Nationals and Marlins, and much of it before record-setting home crowds, while Tom Glavine finished things off with the least -- and hopefully not last -- start of his career.
Mitigating circumstances: Mathematically (as in every other sense) this was a catastrophe: The Mets' 99.80 percent chance to reach the playoffs was the second-highest figure ever by a team that failed to do so. However, there was perhaps no one signature moment or game; the loss to the Marlins in Game 162 was a symbolic in a way, but it was also an anticlimactic affair that was over by the middle of the 1st inning. Nor was the National League a great league; the Mets' only real enemies were themselves.
100 year ago today on 22 Sep 1911, Cy Young won his 511th and final game.
It was the record then, it is the record now and it'll be the record forever.
The must be the least likely record to to ever be broken in any sport.
Nice Stats!
As a cubs fan the incident isn't one of my favourites but I do feel bad for Bartman, the players still had opportunities to win the game that night but he is the scapegoat (no pun intended). I will have to keep an eye out for that documentary as it sounds interesting!
As for the Wildcards I can see the both leagues having a one game play off on Thursday but if I were a betting man, it would be Boston and the Cardinals going through!
Good win for my second team, the Brewers.
If there'd been a Sox v Brewers series, I was planning to go to the games in Milwaukee.
Puggles, I hope it isn't obvious?
In other news, its looking more and more likely that Theo Epstein will be leaving the Red Sox to join the Cubs.
This is a great more for him in my opinion. If he fails in Chicago, he's done no worse than anyone else in the past 103 years. However, if Theo did bring a title to the North Side he's go down as the greatest Baseball Executive ever.

What's your gut feeling on what the Sox will do in terms of GM and manager?
As for Manager, I really haven't got a clue.
Now we’ve all had enough with Roush Racing and Liverpool soccer. Yankee fans never had to worry about George Steinbrenner taking his eyes off the prize in the interest of building ships.
Try this on with your pink hat: On the final night of the regular season, while the Sox were playing in Baltimore, fighting for their playoff lives, virtual ads during the baseball broadcast reminded you to watch Liverpool-Wolverhampton the next day at 4 p.m. That’s the same time that the Sox would have been playing their one-game playoff against Tampa Bay on TBS.
Got that? On Thursday, Sept. 29, at 4 p.m., the geniuses at NESN wanted you to watch soccer - instead of a one-game playoff involving the Red Sox.
Consistent with this insult, NESN the next day cut away from analysis of a postmortem press conference featuring Terry Francona and Theo Epstein (remember them?) at Fenway. While NESN rival Comcast went knee-deep into analysis, the Sox flagship TV station went to soccer.
Wow.
Looks like the Rangers are headed to the Series!
Both good news for me, but it could all go pear shaped if the Cards come back and Theo turns out to be a goat, fingers crossed!
So UK RedSox how do you feel about Theo going, now it has finally been confirmed?

London’s moniker in the Frontier Baseball League (FBL) will officially be the Rippers with a logo bearing a resemblance to Jack the Ripper, an infamous late-19th century serial killer from London, England, who preyed on female prostitutes.
Aside from the contentious name, the timing of the announcement coincided with Wear Purple Day in London, an initiative that aims to raise awareness about issues relating to women abuse.
Well it is different, in the MLB the Cubs name Dale Sveum as their new manager!
The Houston Astros have been sold and will be switched to the American League
This will mean inter-league games every day of the season and probably an extra Wild Card spot
My favorite part of the Paplebon saga is that everyone in Boston is now RIPPING him and claiming they never liked him in the first place.
Which isn't really a shocker, but it is still funny.
(because it is blatantly not true)
I read that they'd upped the bleacher prices in the Death Star anyway, so sitting out there isn't as good a deal as it used to be
So, Bobby V?
Reyes joins the Miami Marlins on a 6 year contract for $110m, I think it said, discuss!
If Prince goes to the Cubs then the NL Central is suddenly very competitive between the Cubs, Cards and Brewers
This is nothing more than a circumstantial election to the hall of fame.
McCarver just happened to broadcast many postseason and significant games over the years and I guess that’s what got the attention of those who elect the recipient of the Ford C. Frick Award.
Hopefully next year a real broadcaster, a broadcaster who has done his job with excellence, will be elected.

Ryan Braun has won his appeal against a suspension for using PEDs
http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/7608360/milwaukee-brewers-ryan-braun-wins-appeal-50-game-suspension
Just read the report and it appears that an arbitrator may have thrown out the case because of a "chain of custody" problem (full details of the ruling haven't yet been released).
Its going to be interesting to see how Braun reacts when reporters ask why his sample was positive.
As a semi-Brewers fan, in one way I'm happy that he'll be available to play. However, on first glance, it does look like he might have got away with cheating.
I see that MLB is considering appealing the ruling. Therefore, this specific case isn't over yet.
It may also lead to other players who have failed tests (cough...... Manny Being Manny...... cough) appealing on similar grounds.
The ruling could also have implications in the wider sporting world if it turns out that chain-of-custody and testing procedures have not been adhered to elsewhere.

Looks like Kerry Wood is set to retire after one more appearance for the Cubbies, probably for the best but what a player he was at his best.
4. Chicago Cubs vs. New York Yankees; Kerry Wood vs. Roger Clemens.
It had the billings of a heavy weight fight. The entire series had a playoff-type atmosphere surrounding it. On June 2 2003 Clemens was going for his 300th career win. Wood on the other hand was going for his 50th.
Wood along with help from an Eric Karros three-run homer and a big strike-out of Jason Giambi by Mike Remlinger the Cubs would go on to beat the Yankees and deny the Rocket his 300th victory.

On September 18, 1919, on a day that the Chicago White Sox defeated the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park 3-2, bookmaker and gambler Joseph "Sport" Sullivan went to the Hotel Buckminster room of Arnold "Chick" Gandil, first baseman for the Chicago White Sox. There they conspired to fix the 1919 World Series, which was to take place thirteen days later, for personal gain.

So do you think Mr Clemens is innocent?
Dewayne Wise was helped up by several fans in the stands, saw the emphatic out call and thought one thing: keep the glove closed.
Wise ran straight for the dugout -- giving birthday boy Derek Jeter a glove tap on the way -- after flipping into the crowd while trying to make a catch of a foul ball during the New York Yankees' 6-4 win over the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night.
"What was I supposed to do run back to left field?" Wise said. "I saw him looking at my glove so I just got up, put my head down and ran off the field."
Wise knew he never had the ball when he went over the low wall down the left-field line with two outs and a runner on third base in the seventh inning. Third base umpire Mike DiMuro didn't realize the ball hit off Wise's glove and fell for a souvenir until he saw a replay after the game.

An innings for the batting side goes on until 3 batters are out. There are 9 batters and if the pitching team have a mare they can all bat multiple times in an inning.
I've chosen the Cubs, on the basis they haven't won it for a million years so I can't be accused of being a glory-hunter.
They often go through the batting order/line up 4 or 5 times (at bats) in a game, if you want to get into baseball start watching the post season games as they tend to be very entertaining and if you haven't picked a team yet... choose wisely!

It appears that the Sox will be bringing in their former Pitching Coach and current Blue Jays Manager, John Farrell as their skipper for the 2013 season.
I rate him as a pitching coach but he hasn't done anything in Toronto to convince me that he's a top manager. I'd have preferred to see the Sox follow the lead of the White Sox and Cardinals by bringing in someone like Brad Ausmus.

The Boston Red Sox on Monday officially announced the re-signing of David Ortiz, for whom they will hold a news conference at 4 p.m. ET. The veteran designated hitter will get a two-year deal worth at least $26 million, according to a source.
Ortiz, who made $14.575 million last season on a one-year deal, will make $14 million in 2013 and $11 million in 2014, and will get a $1 million signing bonus with performance incentives that could bring the total value to $30 million, according to a team source.
Talks between the soon-to-be 37-year-old Ortiz and the Red Sox began late in the season and concluded with an accord Friday night. The veteran slugger has spent the past 10 seasons in Boston and made no secret about his desire to remain with the team.
Ortiz was on pace for a productive 2012 before he suffered a right Achilles strain July 16. He was limited to only one more game the rest of the season and finished with a .318 average, 23 home runs and 60 RBIs in 90 games.
Since his arrival in Boston before the 2003 season, Ortiz has spent the past 10 seasons becoming one of the best DHs in the game. He has a .290 career average with the Red Sox, including 343 homers and 1,088 RBIs.
He was a critical component of the team's two World Series championships in 2004 and '07.

The Evil Empire's "no facial hair" policy means that Youk doesn't even look like himself
A panel of trademark judges in Washington, D.C., earlier this month denied a request from a private entrepreneur, known as Evil Enterprises, Inc., to register the trademark for the phrase "Baseballs Evil Empire."
Evil Enterprises wanted the exclusive right to market merchandise using that phrase, which was coined in regard to the Yankees by Larry Lucchino, the president and chief executive of the Boston Red Sox, back in 2002. Upon learning that the Yankees had signed sought-after Cuban pitcher Jose Contreras, Lucchino was widely reported as saying: "The evil empire extends its tentacles even into Latin America."
Evil Enterprises initially applied for a trademark back in July of 2008.
But the Yankees objected, arguing that they had the rights to the phrase—at least when used in connection with baseball.
Part of the Yankees' argument: a concession that in the baseball world, they are, in fact, the "Evil Empire." In its legal papers, the team referenced a number of articles from the past decade using the term in connection with the Yankees, and conceded that the team has "implicitly embraced" the "Evil Empire" theme by playing music from Star Wars during their home games.
The panel of judges sided with the Yankees, ruling that the Yankees are strongly associated with the phrase. Allowing anyone else to use the phrase exclusively would likely cause confusion, ruled the judges.
"In short, the record shows that there is only one Evil Empire in baseball and it is the New York Yankees," wrote the judges. "Accordingly, we find that [the Yankees] have a protectable trademark right in the term . . . as used in connection with baseball."
Great punch-up in the Mexico game.

My Picks:-
AL East - Blue Jays
AL Central -
AL West - Angels
AL Wild Card - Indians & Rays
NL East - Nationals
NL Central - Cards
NL West - Dodgers
NL Wild Card - Braves & Cubs (ever the optimist but probably Reds)
World Series - Dodgers over Rays

12 people were charged, including A-Rod. He's the only one that appealed knowing that would allow him to play out this season - presumably for selfish reasons and I think that's why he labeled him as a dick. All the others waived their right to appeal and took a lesser suspension and will be back for next season or the playoffs.

During Game 6 of the 2004 ALCS against the Red Sox, Rodriguez hit a slow roller between first base and the pitcher's mound. As Boston hurler Bronson Arroyo fielded the ball and tried to apply the tag, A-Rod slapped the ball from his glove. Derek Jeter, who was on first base, came around to score while Rodriguez advanced to second base as the ball rolled to shallow rightfield. The umpires huddled after the play and ruled that A-Rod's slap was interference, forcing Jeter to return to second base and nullifying the run. Boston went onto win the game and the series
During an early-season matchup with the Blue Jays, Rodriguez got into some hot water north of the border. With two out in the ninth and the Yankees leading 10-5, Jorge Posada hit an infield pop-up. As third baseman Howie Clark settled under the ball, Rodriguez ran past him on the base path. Video replays clearly showed Rodriguez yelling something that was described by Jays on the field as "Mine!" or "I got it!" The ball dropped, a run scored and Jays shortstop John McDonald had to be restrained from attacking Rodriguez, who insisted he only yelled, "Ha."I was actually at this game and within ear-shot. As A-Roid yelled out I remember thinking "WTF is he playing at"
Just your bog standard wild pitch on an intentional walk, walk-off win

Wild pitches during an intentional walk do occur every now and again. Pitchers aren't used to throwing deliberately wide, so sometimes they over do it.

I agree, but in the rules it doesn't matter if it was deliberate or not he still impeded his progress to the next base, in this case home.

The Rangers have taken Russell Wilson in the "Rule 5 " Minor League Draft.
I'm surprised that his contract with the Mariners allows him to return to baseball but apparently he's already told the Rangers that he intends to be at spring training.
Yep, you spotted my deliberate error.
I suspect that Wilson will just attend Spring Training and not play any actual games. However, the fact that this was a Rule 5 pick might mean that he has to start the season on the roster.

2 games in for the Cubs and their record is 0-2, they lost the first game 1-0 in ten innings on Monday then the second game they lose 4-3 in sixteen (16) innings during the longest ever game in Pittsburgh. I don't know whether to laugh or cry!
Watched some baseball last night and just about followed it. Couple of things I'd like clarified, apologies if they sound idiotic. When the pitcher throws a "ball" ie not a strike, am I right in thinking after a certain number the batsman gets a free pass to first base? Also the losing team were 2 runs short with 2 outs in the 9th, if the next batsman had hit a home run would he have been sensible to stop at 3rd base in order to try and get 2 runs later or do you take any run you can get? Thanks.

After 4 "balls" the batsman gets a "walk" to first base.
You'd take the run and take the game into extra innings.

But they were 9-7 down and the home run would only have taken it to 9-8?

Sorry, I don't understand this scenario.
If a side is two runs down and hits a home run, they're one run down and the next batter can tie it with a homer.
If a side is two runs down and hits a homer but the player stops at third base**, they'd still be two runs down but the next batter could still tie the game with a homer.
Therefore, what's the point of the first player stopping at third ?
(** not that you're allowed to do this anyway)
Down by 17 runs to 1 after five innings

Twenty years ago, baseball played a season that wasn't. Or a season that kind of was. There were at least 112 games per team -- some played a few more -- but no resolution. There were MVPs and Cy Young Awards, but no World Series winner.
Labor issues stopped the game on Aug. 12 and the season was forsaken entirely on Sept. 14. It was the baseball equivalent of an abandoned manuscript found in Salinger's basement, and it doesn't take much imagination to turn the game's roughest first draft into a fairy tale: Tony Gwynn would have become the first player since Ted Williams to hit .400; Matt Williams would have broken Roger Maris' single-season home run record; the Expos would have won the World Series and the team would still be in Montreal, playing in a state-of-the-art downtown ballpark.

JEREMY BROWN
Catcher, first round, University of Alabama; played five games in the majors in 2006.
Brown's husky build made him one of the more unorthodox draft picks of the A's in 2002. He lasted six seasons in the Oakland organization, managing only 10 official MLB at-bats (three hits). In 2008, the Alabama native announced his retirement, walked away from the game and returned home to Hueytown to follow in the footsteps of his father and become a coal miner. In his life after baseball, Brown and Dad descend into the mines at night, emerging the next morning covered in coal dust. "Playing baseball is something that I loved to do, but I'm happier now because of my family and not because of my job," Brown says. "I'm married with a little boy and a little girl. I'm able to coach youth baseball." Most important? "I'm home and not traveling all the time.

After getting two quick outs in the bottom of the 12th inning on Saturday night, Orioles reliever Brian Matusz had his arm checked by umpires for a foreign substance and was ejected from Baltimore's 13-inning, 1-0 loss.
"We're not going to address the issue right now," Matusz said. "Obviously I have my own personal opinions about the issue, but right now with emotions running high, we're going to let this settle and address questions at a later time."
Miami manager Dan Jennings halted the game to ask for the inspection. Matusz then left with the game still scoreless, and he was relieved by T.J. McFarland.
"We saw a substance," Jennings said. "We saw something shining on his arm. So we watched him a couple of pitches to see how many times he went to it. So I went out, and I asked home-plate umpire Jordan [Baker] to check it. Crew chief Paul Emmel asked me if I wanted to check. I said, 'Yes.' So he checked, and by their opinion, there was something there -- a foreign substance -- and they made their decision."
"The protocol is that the manager has to come out and make us aware of something like that and ask us if we want to go check the opposing pitcher, and he did," Emmel said. "And so I went out there and told the pitcher I was going to touch his right forearm, because that's where he was touching before he went to the ball, and yes, I detected a foreign substance. So the pitcher was ejected and we went from there."
Orioles manager Buck Showalter said he had been in the situation before and didn't feel the need to argue the decision.
"They just thought he had a sticky substance on his arm," he said. "It is what it is."
Brewers reliever Will Smith was ejected from Thursday night's game against the Braves for having a foreign substance on his arm. He has since been suspended for eight games.

I've been watching odd bits of this sport and I must admit I like it. Unfortunately I don't have a clue about what team I should support so I'm picking the Oakland Athletics as my team purely because they won me a few quid the other night. So, go A's.

Great read, thanks for posting UKRS.. is this the year of the Cub?
The three best teams in baseball come from the NL North (Cardinals, Pirates & Cubs). It's criminal that one of them will not make it past Wednesday - the wildcard game. 162 game season comes down to a one game playoff, which is scandalous.
The Mets and the Dodgers won 8 & 6 games less respectively than the Pirates. How can the balance be right? The three best teams in baseball come from the NL North (Cardinals, Pirates & Cubs). I think that they've got the balance just right.
If you want to avoid the one game playoff, win your division
Everyone knows the rules at the start of the season,Doesn't mean they are fair or shouldn't change.
Another year without the Yankees winning it.
Cubs win, wow Arrieta is good!

This is the view that my friend Chris had from his seat at Wrigley last nightWrigley was the most wonderful place on a sunny weekday afternoon. The most beautiful field (sorry Redsox) mixed with the joyful atmosphere of a few thousand folk bunking off work.

The Mets are putting us through the ringer. Again. To lighten the mood, Chase Utley should be made to do a walk of shame through Queens in his Dodgers uniform.
Don't you just love October baseball!
Don't you just love October baseball!
The Rangers @ Blue Jays game was nuts
That pitcher Dyson for the Rangers is a right knob. If you don't want a player to celebrate a Home Run, try not giving up the Home Run in the first place
Also, per ESPN........
2015 will be 1st postseason in which all 4 LCS teams have NOT won a World Series title in previous 20 seasons (LCS began in 1969)

Great that you were there TV
I know who won but am watching the Blue Jays game on MLBTV thanks to NowTV. Feels like i've been watching the 7th inning for hours. Most mental inning i've ever seen. Forgotten how much I love baseball at times. Especially October ball. Blue Jays aggro, hello hello, eh.
Disappointed the Astros lost, I think Rasmus is a cracking player in pretty much every game i've seen him in (which admittedly sin't that many). It was some choke the Astros did though.
Only game i've seen before that with so many police appearing was a Red Sox/Yankee game years ago. BJ fans (still makes me giggle) lobbing cans and bottles from the upper deck and hitting their own fans with them
Sorry to cut in, but if you were a chap who was interested in getting into following baseball, where's a good primer to understand rules, history etc?
Arrieta not having the start the Cubs wanted. Not at all!
2-0 Mets, beating Lester and Arrieta. Not looking good for the Cubbies, but they can always look back to us in 2004 and keep hopes up.
Blue Jays look screwed, hard to see them coming back from 3-1 down if they lose this as looks likely. I was really hoping for a Toronto/Cubs final.

Me too
Well seems i've jinxed both sides by wanting them in the WS. Toronto partly because it must have shite to be stuck in the same division as Red Sox and Yankees when for years when both were outspending everyone else. And the Cubs as a good mate of mine is a Cubs fan and has been since the late 80s/early 90s. So would be nice for him to have finally get his 2004 moment.
Assuming it a KC/Mets final then i'll be hoping for KC. So get your money on the Mets in 4!
Murphy creates a new record as he homers in six straight post season games.

Was pretty straightforward for KC tonight.
Well done Royals, any predictions on trades over the off season?

David Price to the Red Sox. 7 years $217m

Jason Heyward seems to be following Zobrist too!
Try to go to a US game of some sort. We went to see the NY Jets play. The sports themselves are shit, but as an experience it was incredible.
Yeah, can't see why anyone would head to the USA just to watch their sports ;)
PS.... is anyone else going over for the Minor League Baseball (Single-A Short-Season, New York/Penn League) Staten Island Yankees home opener against the Brooklyn Cyclones on Sat 18 June ?
is the minor leagues where the majority of players come from for the MLB teams or is it straight from College teams? Or is minor league where the has-beens and not good enoughs ply their trade?

Piss poor by the Sox, deservedly swept. Not one of the starters managed 5 innings and the bats were quiet.

The Blue Jays are in need of a miracle.

Maybe something like this from exactly 12 years before the Jays went 0-3 down in the 2016 ALCS
Cubs bats have gone cold - no runs in 18 innings.
Cubs bats heated up tonight, especially the guys in a slump... best of 3 now!
Gotta fancy Cubs won't lose both at home. But if Kershaw wins as you'd probably back him to, a one game play off in game 7 and anything can happen. Who could be the Cubs goat this time?
Wow... just gobsmacked. Cubs win the pennant and Villa win back to back games. Hell must have frozen over, I must admit a bit of dust got in my eyes or the wife was chopping onions.

I heard that the Cubs have never had a non-white player play in the WS either, it really has been too long.
Cubs fecked that one up top of the 7th. Bases loaded and 0 outs and failed to score.

Could be massive for the Cubs getting out that still level, especially if they can score now.

Chapman is very quick but can be wild
Can't believe they used Chapman when in such a strong position. If you can't trust the rest of your bullpen to hold a 5 run lead then it doesn't say much about them.
What a crazy game, chin is up as its been a classic but whatever happens you'll always think what if.
It shows that there's hope for the Villa to win the Cup again. I just hope it's in my lifetime.
This is either the first nice thing to happen this year or confirmation that the end of days are upon us.
Presidential election?
Of course PWS, hope you got some sleep... still no sign of jcsutvI went to sleep at the end of the 8th thinking the chance had gone for the cubs. When I got up it was superb, but I had to get off to work. Just got back.
Long day at work Johnno, if it is any consolation I didn't get to sleep until 1am here as I was a giddy as a schoolgirl. I must have had 10 heart attacks during the game but thankfully it went in our favour. It is up there with villa winning the cup in 1994 and 1996, baseball can be so good like that. So close to losing then seconds later 108 years of waiting is over. Crazy!
Jeff Bagwell, Tim Raines and Ivan "Pudge'' Rodriguez were elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame on Wednesday, while Vladimir Guerrero and Trevor Hoffman fell just short of the 75 percent threshold required in voting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.
Bagwell got 86.2 percent of the vote, and Raines got 86 percent. Rodriguez got 76 percent, receiving four more votes than the necessary 332 of 442.
I'm in NY end of Feb and my colleagues have rented a ball park for the evening as part of a team building project closedown celebration, we get coaching and then get to play a few innings of baseball. Having driven past it many times and sat staring at it from the traffic jams that wind their way down from the Palisades of New Jersey into the Lincoln Tunnel, I get to strut my stuff and knock it out of the park at Weehawken Stadium on Friday 2nd March.
Having played softball at school and pretty good in the hand eye co-ordination department I'm looking forward to this.

That sound good Jon
The closest that I've ever come to playing baseball was a couple of hours in the batting cages in Cooperstown and throwing a ball around in a sporting goods store in Chicago. We were asked to leave the store

Los Angeles Dodgers starter Rich Hill took a perfect game into the ninth inning against the Pirates tonight. He’d make it through nine with the no-hitter intact and come out to pitch the tenth. He’d leave the game the loser. Sometimes baseball isn’t fair.
Pirates second baseman Josh Harrison hit a leadoff walkoff homer in the bottom of the 10th inning on Hill’s 99th pitch of the night. Up until that point the only blemish on the box score was a Logan Forsythe error that allowed a runner to reach in the bottom of the ninth. Hill worked around that, however, and came out for the 10th. In so doing he was the first pitcher to take a no-hitter into extra-innings since Pedro Martinez did it on June 3, 1995.
Watched the Red Sox game last night and this morning. Just the 19 innings!

I'd love to watch baseball in Japan.
The Sox opened their season over there a few years ago. I contacted the team to see if they we organising any trips. They weren't and neither was my mate who runs a baseball tour company.
I went ahead and booked another trip only to be contacted by the Sox a few days later and told that they thought running a trip to Japan was a good idea.
For the first time my mate is running a trip to Japan this season. However, due to my father's poor health, I'm reluctant to be away for that long.
Hopefully I'll get over to Japan some day

Thanks UKR, registered, one of my remaining ambitions is to see a MLB game. No chance of going stateside so hopefully this will do the trick.
Baseball star Robinson Cano has been banned for 80 games after testing positive for the banned diuretic Furosemide.
The Seattle Mariners second baseman, one of baseball's highest paid players, has accepted the punishment, his team said.
The 35-year-old, who is halfway through a 10-year $240 million contract, said he took the drug on a visit to his native Dominican Republic.
"He made a mistake," the Mariners said.
Cano is an eight-time MLB All-Star with 305 career home runs and more than 2,400 hits.
He won the 2009 World Series with the New York Yankees.
"We were disappointed to learn today that Robinson had violated the terms of Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program," the Mariners said. "Our organisation fully supports the programme.
"He has explained to us what happened, accepted the punishment and has apologised to the fans, the organisation and his teammates. We will support Robinson as he works through this challenge."
Diuretics can be used as a masking agent to hide the presence of performance-enhancing drugs or to assist rapid weight loss.
"While I did not realise at the time that I was given a medication that was banned, I obviously now wish that I had been more careful," Cano said in the statement.
"I would never do anything to cheat the rules of the game that I love."
Is that the Yankees out now then?

In a nutshell that is it, just like with cricket. Unfortunately, just like I don't have the patience to explain the nuances of cricket to Americans, I don't have the patience to do it for baseball either :-)

It's not very complicated Risso
Have you never played Rounders or Softball ?
There's different types of pitching. Baseball is a very skillful game but it takes quite a while to start picking it up.
Thanks all. We sat through it all anyway. More enjoyable than the Villa game on ESPN! I've picked Boston as my MLB team, does that make me the baseball equivalent of a Man U fan?
If you get chance Riss go to a batting cage, everyone I know that's done it has realised just how skilled a batter is. Especially once it's cranked up to 90+mph.

Just need to figure out who to support now.
What ? There's only one option
I'm a bit surprised that there's enough demand in the UK for baseball to get away with those prices. The NFL I understand, as lots of people I know like American Football at some level, but I've never met anyone (other than the good folk on here) who have the remotest interest in baseball.
I'm now stuck in the queue for the Stadium's own pre-sale.
I thought that I might have a chance with this until MLB tweeted out the link yesterday.

Oh another question...probably very sad of me I know, but I was thinking of getting the NY cap and may be a baseball as a souvenir of the game. Do they take the piss with merchandise pricing at the games or is it relatively similar to any other clothing or sports shop?
Nice one. This will be my first time in NYC and proper looking forward to it! 😊
Thanks for all the advise UKR.

How do they manage to get 81 home games per season then? :o
Yeah I went to baseball, basketball and ice hockey games last time I was in America a few years ago and they had cup holders on the seats in front (some rank bastard in front of us was chewing tobacco and using his to hold his glass of spit! 🤮). I also remember paying over $10 for a beer in the stadiums which wasn’t as impressive as the cup holders!
I’m wandering if wearing a Villa retro shirt would be frowned upon at a game in NYC.
Original Tampa Rays owner Vince Naimoli has died at 81.
He got a bad rap as Rays owner and no doubt he tried to do things on the cheap.
As I've mentioned on here before, back in 2000 I attended a game at all 30 ballparks in 32 days. There were 6 of us who completed the trip, our leader being a Tampa resident and season ticket holder.
In 2001 we were invited to the Hall of Fame over induction weekend and had our own induction ceremony for the 'Stadium Hall of Fame' along the lines of the main one, including speeches and wearing a team cap.
Vince flew up from Tampa to be there for my mate's induction and came across as a nice guy. He also had my mate introduced to the crowd at a Rays game and inducted into the team's own hall of fame.
A couple of years later, my mate told Vince about the poor state of repair of the baseball field at their mutual alma mater, Fairleigh Dickinson University. Vince donated $1m to build new facilities.

Bring photo I’d to Yankee stadium to get a beer. I am an obvious 40 ahem something and couldn’t get a beer as I had no proof of age. At Fenway, Boston they didn’t ask and I happily had a couple. Sat by a Millwall fan in his top at Boston and had a good time and piss take with him.

That must have been a fantastic trip. How difficult did you find to plan it?
If you'd done the 30 grounds in 30 days then i'd have been impressed :P
A third no-hitter of his career for Justin Verlander
I've only ever seen one baseball game - the Mariners versus the Astros while I was in Seattle, and unfortunately it was awful, which was a shame as I think it's something I could quite enjoy on a nice sunny day. Just happened to get a boring game.
Safeco Field on September 4th, 2017. It ended 2-6 to the Astros.
2010s is the first decade since the 1910s that the Highlanders/Yankees haven't reached the World Series.
David Ross is the Cubs' new Manager, didn't see that coming.
Tough to root for a DC team, but I find myself wanting them to win........if nothing else, to see Bryce Harper's face.
Nationals fans with game 4 or 5 tickets must have been thinking they had a chance of seeing it clinched after the first two. Bit of a letdown in reality.
Calling Toronto Villa. How easy is it to get tickets for rounders games? The missus wants to see a bout (is that what they call them) and I'm hoping to take her to the Blue Jays when we're in Toronto next year. They've got a couple of regular season games while we're out there. My only knowledge of baseball crowds - and their size - comes from the Springfield Isotopes and whoever the Capital City Goofball supports. Is there a particular bit of the ground that's better to be in?
Should be piss easy to get tickets, this season just finished they averaged less than 22k in a stadium that holds nearly 50k. Behind home plate is best, Red Sox will probably be more precise as to which level.
Cubbies v Cardinals at London Tax Payer Stadium 13/14 June 2020.
Do you get told off if you move behind the bowler's arm?
Gerrit Cole agrees $324m 9 year deal. Not a bad gig!

Just waiting for the hammer to come down on the Red Sox now
Typical, I moved to with 6 hours of Boston and had tickets for the Red Sox v Cleveland game on April 17th but now canceled. Oh well there'll be other times.
St. Stephen, NB on the border with Maine
Must have taken a hell of a lot of planning, did you do it all yourself? And when are you doing it again?!
What an experience. I was thinking DC instead of Montreal must make things easier to tick them all off for people doing it now.
Which were the best/worst ballparks?
Lot of changes since then, I'm guessing a fair few have been torn down or rebuilt?
The Red Sox World Series victory victory parade a couple of years was absolutely brilliant. About 100 amphibious vehicles driving from Fenway through the middle of Boston with ticker tape explosions everywhere. I've never seen anything like it, nor indeed, smelt quite as much weed in a city centre.

Generally cheer for the AL team apart from the Red Sox and Astros (who are more NL anyway) but a mate's from Tampa Bay and a big Rays fan so hope they win. Sh!t ball park though.
Sounds like Cleveland are finally going to change their name, I can't believe I beat UKRS to the thread!
The media kept the reporter's nationality out of the reports to protect her identity.
Apparently the Mets then publicly said where she's from >:(
It was said that if people in her country knew that she was the victim, it would be her who was blamed.
So, whatever countries fit that bill
A minor league baseball player is facing drug charges after police in Colorado found 21 pounds of methamphetamine and 1.2 pounds of oxycodone pills in his Chicago Cubs duffel bag.https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/31101243/minor-leaguer-jesus-camargo-corrales-arrested-colorado-methamphetamine-oxycodone-found-chicago-cubs-duffel-bag

Happy Opening Day everyone
with the Sox game rained off, I watched the Twins @ Brewers.
A great game, featuring a 9th inning comeback and extra inning victory for Milwaukee

Cleveland Indians to be renamed Cleveland Guardians.
Anyone have an idea what is going on at the Cubs, selling the silverware for peanuts?
Assume all on late in the night? I was hoping to record one and watch without knowing the score. I might give YouTube a go, thanks. I don't really understand it yet but always happy to take on a new sport. Mind you I think they are missing a trick not bothering their arses with the Olympics any more.

Plenty of afternoon games, which start around 6pm our time.

This has to be phrased differently now......
Either - "......in what was then deemed Major League Baseball"
or ".......in the NL or AL"
The Negro Leagues are now considered to be Major League.
Does that mean Jackie Robinson is no longer considered to be the first African American to play in Major League Baseball?
Getting nervous UK Redsox?

If they can't win enough games this week against the terrible Orioles and Nationals, the Sox don't deserve to be in the playoffs.
Given the roster, they've done very well to even be in with a shout of the AL wild card
The NL wild card race has had quite the turn around in the past couple of weeks, with a remarkable run from the Cards coinciding with a collapse by the Padres.
Wow would a Bucks and Brewers holding national titles be unheard of in US Sports terms?

Do you mean specifically Milwaukee, or any city holding two titles ?
This is where the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry stands now. Since the Yankees were up 3-0 in the 2004 AL Championship Series, the Red Sox have beaten them in eight of nine postseason games. Boston has won four World Series and New York one.
Dodgers win and play the Giants. I think they will win that series. In fact my world series prediction is a repeat of last year, Rays v Dodgers but I think the Rays might win it this time
There's my Rays for world series prediction up in smoke.
Houston Astros are American League champions. That will go down well.
MLB lockout should end today and Spring Training startWhy don't they just bin a week of the spring training games instead?
Season will start around a week late, but the cancelled games look like they'll be reinstated.
Therefore, expect more double-headers and expanded rosters
Looks like my spell as a Cubs fan may be about to come to an end. Fucking Chelsea, FFS.
Didn't realise the Cubs' owner was a racist. Can't support them, then. UKRS, you know about these things. Am I okay to support White Sox? Or are they arseholes for some reason, too?
Off to Fenway tonight for the first time to see the Sox play the Tigers, any recommendations on what to do in Bean Town UKRS?

Great trip, did it all and really loved the markets... only 6 hours away so i'll go back soon.
The old Tiger Stadium was great. Loved watching games from the upper deck behind home plate
The new one was falling apart (concrete steps crumbling) as soon as it opened in 2000. However, when I was there a few years later, it had improved
Blue Jays 28 (Twenty Eight) Red Sox 5

No comments on Judge breaking the AL home runs record?
Is it fair to say this is categorised as the "clean" record? Are there any question marks over Judge?

Are they British players, playing in America?
Planned to watch some of it but it was all on at inconvenient times. Far too much sport this weekend, should have had it on a Friday night.
Actually, scratch that. Fourth place finish and qualification to next one according to Wikipedia
I had a friend was a big baseball player
Domingo Germán watched with angst as the four umpires conferred near Rogers Centre’s first-base line on Tuesday night, and it was not a good sign when their chat ended quickly. An unacceptable sticky residue had been discovered on the Yankees right-hander’s palm, confirming that he had thrown his final pitch of an abbreviated evening.
Exactly what the substance was remains up for debate. Speaking after the Yankees’ 6-3 win over the Blue Jays, Germán insisted that he had used only the rosin bag, which is available at the back of the mound. Crew chief James Hoye disputed that in the strongest terms, saying it was “definitely not rosin,” and that “this was sticky, as in my fingers had a hard time coming off his palm.”
Either way, Germán faces an automatic 10-game suspension, which puts the Yankees in a bind -- they cannot replace him on the active roster.
"I’ve got to apologize to my teammates and my team,” Germán said through an interpreter. “I'm putting them in a tough position right now. Understanding how much the bullpen has been used, and what my plan was for tonight to pitch, and putting them in a tough situation where I'm not pitching out there anymore."

UKRS - did you attend the Cubs/Cardinals series?
Fair enough. Looked like a good weekend and they did push the outfield back a little and the scoring was kept in check, but still good enough to keep the locals and visitors entertained.
Watch coverage of game one from 00:30 BST on Saturday 28th October live on BBC iPlayer, the BBC Sport app & website or via the Red Button.

In the tenth game of the season, the Miami Marlins finally get their first win
The Red Sox have a rare trip to Pittsburgh later in the month - of course, I will be in Florida.
Last time they were here I went to all 3 games and it was excellent.

Just had a look to see how many games I've attended in Pittsburgh
Two at old Three Rivers (first was in 1998)
Twelve at PNC Park (most recent in 2016)
Plus one NFL (Raiders @ Steelers) and one NCAAF (Ohio @ Pitt) at Heinz Field - both in 2004
Enjoy your trip. Good to get some guaranteed victories in against the Shite Sox.
Liverpool vs Man U? Will give that a miss...
UKR is over there at the moment I think, I wonder if he's going to the game.

Padres clinched a playoff spot with a walk-off triple play
The Oakland Athletics beat the Texas Rangers 3-2 in their final home game at the Coliseum as supporters said farewell to the Bay Area in San Francisco.
Nearly 47,000 fans turned out for the game before a planned franchise move to Las Vegas by club owner John Fisher.
Major League Baseball's nine-time World Series champions have spent the past 56 seasons at the Oakland Coliseum.
Despite supporter acceptance that the stadium requires major refurbishment, the decision to move the club out of California and 550 miles to neighbouring Nevada has been widely criticised.
Fisher, in a letter to supporters on Monday, said all options had been exhausted after attempts were made to seek land in the area to build a new stadium.
ATL won game 2, so ARZ were eliminated ;D

Don't they have salary caps in baseball?
Can you imagine the top business graduate leaving Harvard and being told they had to go work for a firm in Arse City, Arkansas at a set low salary rather than on Wall Street for megabucks?
